gratefulness innovator: Self Improvement Month: Get Organized
This month is Self Improvement Month. All this month I will do a weekly post to help you improve yourself by getting organized.
Last week we took a home assessment for Self Improvement Month. This week we put that plan into action. This week it is time to get organized!
Look over your home assessment list and let?s get started.
- You want to first gather your supplies. (Trash bags, boxes, sharpies, etc.)
- You want to get started in one area first.
- Sweep through the house organizing according to the plan you wrote out last week.
- Immediately take out the trash and take the donations to where you have already designated them to go.
- Start containerizing what you have decided to keep.
- Put everything in their place. You should already have the designated spots preplanned from your outline last week.
That?s it! You now have completely organized your home. Give yourself a pat on the back and a cup of tea. Now this process can take you several weeks to complete. It?s not like the TV shows you see where everything is tip top in 48 hours. So don?t get discouraged at the length of time it may take to get everything in order. Just keep working your plan and you should have no problem having an organized home in no time.
Next week I will show you how to maintain what you have now put in order. Because maintenance is the key to success.

Whitney Tilson Value Investing Congress - Business Insider
The 8th annual Value Investing Congress (VAC) starts in New York City on Monday, and that means some of the deepest thinkers on Wall Street will be presenting ideas that could rock the world of investing.
At least, that's what's happened in the past. The VAC is where David Einhorn once presented his devastating ideas on Green Mountain. It's also where Bill Ackman delivered his thesis on MBIA and the problems with bond insurers before the financial crisis.
So yeah, it's a big deal.
The VAC was founded by 20-year investing veterans John Schwartz and Whitney Tilson. As Tilson tells it, the idea came from a constant desire to keep learning from the best people in the field. For example, he's sat in on Seth Klarman and Joel Greenblatt's Columbia Business School classes and of course, attends the mother of all learning experiences, the annual Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting.
The VAC is a way for Tilson and Schwartz to contribute to that tradition.
"It's a labor of love trying to share with other investors what I've benefitted from ? listening to smart investors and asking questions," Tilson told Business Insider. "I think panels dumb people down... I became convinced the best learning format was to get the worlds smartest investors together... and the most critical part of it is taking questions, engaging with the audience."
It's an audience of people that, as Tilson put it, "pray at the church of Graham, Dodd, Buffett and Munger."
This year speakers include David Einhorn and Bill Ackman (again), as well as Glenn Tongue from T2 Partners, Barry Rosestein from JANA partners and more. The main thing is that the VAC is a community of experienced of thinkers that are wise to the mistakes most investors make and are willing to share those mistakes.
That said: We asked Tilson to share some of what he's learned over the years, and he came up with two common mistakes investors make pretty quickly. One is following the herd, and another is projecting a company or industry's immediate past into the future.
"If a company's earnings or stock have been going up people project that forever," he said. "The reality is that trees don't grow into the sky, and there's a very real thing called reversion to the mean."
Green Mountain Coffee is a perfect example of that. It was a hot product with patent protection. When that protection was gone, the company said that its business wouldn't change ? obviously that wasn't the case.
Another mistake Tilson shared: Following Wall Street recommendations. Analysts are conflicted because the same companies they research can be their bank's clients. There's supposed to be Chinese Wall, but that isn't always the case, especially because companies can retaliate against analysts for bad ratings.
"Generally speaking they're the last people to warn investors on impending troubles," said Tilson.
There are exceptions to this analyst rule, of course, but more helpful than knowing who the exceptions are is speaking analyst.
"You have to be clever and read between the lines of what an analyst is really saying...It's like the Russians reading Pravda during the Communist era," he added.

Iranian news agency picks up Onion article as fact
CHICAGO (AP) ? A joke by the satirical newspaper The Onion appears to have gotten lost in translation.
An Iranian news agency picked up ? as fact ? a story from the paper about a supposed survey showing an overwhelming majority of rural white Americans would rather vote for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad than President Barack Obama. But it was made up, like everything in the just-for-laughs newspaper, which is headquartered in Chicago.
The English-language service of Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency republished the story Friday, several days after it appeared in The Onion.
The Iranian version copied the original word-for-word, even including a made-up quote from a fictional West Virginia resident who says he'd rather go to a baseball game with Ahmadinejad because "he takes national defense seriously, and he'd never let some gay protesters tell him how to run his country like Obama does."
Homosexual acts are punishable by death in Iran, and Ahmadinejad famously said during a 2007 appearance at Columbia University that "in Iran we don't have homosexuals like in your country."
The Iranian version of the article leaves out only The Onion's description of Ahmadinejad as "a man who has repeatedly denied the Holocaust and has had numerous political prisoners executed."
The article was featured prominently on the Fars website alongside its usual fare of stories about advances in Iranian military technology, condemnation of Israel and Iran's nuclear program. The story appeared to have been taken down by about mid-day, Chicago time.
Calls to Fars representatives were not answered Friday.
The Onion reveled in the fact that it had been taken seriously.
Onion editor Will Tracy put out a tongue-in-cheek statement that referred to Fars as "a subsidiary of The Onion" that has acted as the paper's Middle Eastern bureau since it was founded in the mid-1980s by Onion publisher T. Herman Zweibel.
"The Onion freely shares content with Fars and commends the journalists at Iran's Finest News Source on their superb reportage," Tracy said in jest.
It's not the first time a foreign news outlet has been duped by The Onion. In 2002, the Beijing Evening News, one of the Chinese capital's biggest newspapers, picked up a story from The Onion that claimed members of Congress were threatening to leave Washington unless the building underwent a makeover that included more bathrooms and a retractable dome.

Stocks are falling mid-morning Friday, the last trading day of the third quarter. But the major U.S. market indexes have rallied all year in the face of continued concerns about the health of the U.S. economy, the European debt crisis and slowing growth in China.
The S&P 500 Index (GSPC) has gained more than 6% in the current quarter and 15% since January. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) is up nearly 5% in the past three months and 10.4% year-to-date.
The economic fundamentals are still weak in the U.S. ? the economy grew a paltry 1.3% in the second quarter ? but the Federal Reserve's aggressive bond-buying program pledges to stimulate growth have in turn helped lift stocks higher.

Investors and hedge funds alike have welcomed the Fed's stimulus measures ? commonly referred to as quantitative easing ? with open arms. Even as the stock market has flirted with new highs, a growing number of investors are becoming risk averse.
According to a new survey by Russell Investments, just 31% of investors say stocks are undervalued ? a 35% drop since the beginning of July. There are a lot of questions hanging over the market as it enters the fourth quarter: the outcome of the presidential election, the possibility of a "fiscal cliff" (i.e. a potent combination of large-scale tax hikes and spending cuts) and the likelihood that the tax code will be overhauled.
President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney have a few more weeks to convince voters that their respective economic policies are the best for moving the country forward. The latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll shows voters are split on the candidates when it comes to fixing the economy. But 42% of respondents say they believe the economy will improve in the next 12 months.

From an investor standpoint, Americans have benefited under the president. The S&P 500 has increased 74% and the Dow 67% since President Barack Obama took office in January 2009. Another Obama term could mean more good news for investors - at least in the short term.
According to the Stock Trader's Almanac, stocks have advanced in every fourth quarter since World War II (excluding 1948) when an incumbent president wins the election. The Daily Ticker's Aaron Task and Henry Blodget point out in the accompanying video that markets are presently acting like President Barack Obama will be re-elected.

President Obama's Weekly Address: Urging GOP Lawmakers to Help Homeowners
Four years after the economic crisis threatened to destroy the American economy, the president is urging Republican lawmakers to help homeowners who were unfairly disadvantaged by the housing crisis at the heart of the recession.
"We know the biggest cause of that crisis was reckless behavior in the housing market," the president said in his weekly address. "Millions of Americans who did the right and responsible thing - who shopped for a home, secured a mortgage they could afford, and made their payments on time - were badly hurt by the irresponsible actions of others."
As his first term nears a close, the president boasted, "We're moving in the right direction."
"Home sales and construction are up. Prices are beginning to rise. And more than a million families who began this year owing more on their mortgages than their homes are worth are now back above water," he said.
In an election-year appeal to middle-class voters, the president touted his administration's efforts to revive the housing industry and help responsible homeowners.
"Now, there are some who think that the only option for homeowners is to just stand by and hope that the market has hit bottom. I don't agree with that," he said in a not-so-subtle jab at GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.
"But we can do even more if Congress is willing to do their part," Obama said.
He urged lawmakers to act on his plan to help homeowners refinance at lower rates.
"It's a plan that has the support of independent, nonpartisan economists and leaders across the housing industry," Obama said. "But Republicans in Congress worked to keep it from even getting to a vote. And here we are - seven months later - still waiting on Congress to act. ? This makes no sense. Last week, mortgage rates were at historic lows. But instead of helping more and more hardworking families take advantage of those rates, Congress was away on break. Instead of worrying about you, they'd already gone home to worry about their campaigns."
The president admitted "it's going to take a while for our housing market to fully recover," but said it would take longer "if Congress keeps standing in the way."

A youthful Manipur, coached by former India star Tikken Singh, held their nerves to beat Association of Indian Universities 4-3 and qualify for the quarter-finals of Hockey India?s senior National Men?s Hockey championship, here Friday.
The hard-fought win saw Manipur finishing on top of Pool H with nine points to advance to the knock-out stage while the collegians finished second after losing a well-contested match.
Also through to the next phase of the competition were the Indian Railways who overcame talented Uttar Pradesh 3-1 to top Pool F with an unbeaten record.

Direct Line IPO may be marred by industry probe

LONDON, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Britain's consumer watchdog
could on Friday call on competition regulators to probe the
motor insurance market just as its biggest player, Direct Line,
enters a critical phase in its planned stock market listing,
London's biggest in over a year.
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT), which in May provisionally
recommended the industry be investigated on the grounds that
"dysfunctional" competition forces up the cost of car insurance,
will make a final decision on Friday, a spokesman said.
The watchdog's provisional recommendations for an
investigation by the Competition Commission are usually followed
by a formal referral.
"In most cases where there has been a provisional decision,
this has resulted in a reference," the OFT spokesman said.
The OFT's decision is expected to come as Direct Line begins
accepting investor orders for its shares in an initial public
offering that is likely to value the company at about 2.5
billion pounds ($4.1 billion).
Direct Line announced its intention to float on Sept. 14,
and would under a typical timetable be expected to open its
order book within two weeks.
Direct Line's owner, Royal Bank of Scotland, is
selling the business at European regulators' request to offset
government support it received in the 2008 crisis which left it
82 percent state-owned.
Direct Line and RBS declined to comment.
Analysts have said a competition probe could make it more
difficult for motor insurers to boost their profits through fees
from ancillary services such as the provision of replacement
vehicles.
Direct Line, which also trades under the Churchill and
Privilege brands, is Britain's biggest motor insurer, covering
about one in three cars on the country's roads.

New material, graphene, may soon replace silicon for technology industry, experts say
ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Norwegian researchers are the world's first to develop a method for producing semiconductors from graphene. This finding may revolutionise the technology industry.
The method involves growing semiconductor-nanowires on graphene. To achieve this, researchers "bomb" the graphene surface with gallium atoms and arsenic molecules, thereby creating a network of minute nanowires.
The result is a one-micrometre thick hybrid material which acts as a semiconductor. By comparison, the silicon semiconductors in use today are several hundred times thicker. The semiconductors' ability to conduct electricity may be affected by temperature, light or the addition of other atoms.
Fantastic potential
Graphene is the thinnest material known, and at the same time one of the strongest. It consists of a single layer of carbon atoms and is both pliable and transparent. The material conducts electricity and heat very effectively. And perhaps most importantly, it is very inexpensive to produce.
"Given that it's possible to make semiconductors out of graphene instead of silicon, we can make semiconductor components that are both cheaper and more effective than the ones currently on the market," explains Helge Weman of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Dr Weman is behind the breakthrough discovery along with Professor Bj?rn-Ove Fimland.
"A material comprising a pliable base that is also transparent opens up a world of opportunities, one we have barely touched the surface of," says Dr Weman. "This may bring about a revolution in the production of solar cells and LED components. Windows in traditional houses could double as solar panels or a TV screen. Mobile phone screens could be wrapped around the wrist like a watch. In short, the potential is tremendous."
The researchers have received assistance in gaining patents and founding a company from NTNU Technology Transfer AS, a collaborative partner to the programme entitled Commercialising R&D Results (FORNY2020) at the Research Council of Norway.
However, the path to these findings started with basic research funded under the Research Council's Clean Energy for the Future Programme (RENERGI) and the now-concluded programme, Nanotechnology and New Materials (NANOMAT), which initiated the findings.
The researchers will now begin to create prototypes directed towards specific areas of application. They have been in contact with giants in the electronics industry such as Samsung and IBM. "There is tremendous interest in producing semiconductors out of graphene, so it shouldn't be difficult to find collaborative partners," Dr Weman adds.
The researchers are hoping to have the new semiconductor hybrid materials on the commercial market in roughly five years.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A key witness against convicted child molester and former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, known in court papers as Victim 1, has a book deal and will soon reveal his identity, a publisher announced Thursday.
Ballantine Bantam Dell said that "Silent No More: Victim (hash)1's Fight for Justice Against Jerry Sandusky," is coming out Oct. 23. The memoir will be co-written by the victim's mother and psychologist and "will share how he survived years of shame and secrecy, harassment and accusation, before reporting Sandusky's actions to the authorities, and will offer a hopeful and inspiring message for victims of abuse," Ballantine announced.
Victim 1, now 18, will reveal his identity on the day of the book's release in an interview with ABC's Chris Cuomo.
Financial terms for the book were not disclosed. But Ballantine, an imprint of Random House Inc., plans a donation to a charity for victims of child abuse.
Victim 1 first alerted authorities in 2008 and helped launch the investigation leading to Sandusky's conviction in June on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. Prosecutors said some of the assaults took place on the Penn State campus. Sandusky is scheduled to be sentenced next month and is likely to receive a sentence that will keep him in prison for life.
Victim 1 testified for the prosecution that Sandusky approached him through a summer camp for youth sponsored by The Second Mile, a charity for at-risk youth that the former coach had founded. Their initial contacts consisted of football games and swimming, and Sandusky would attend the boy's wrestling tournaments.
Physical contact began with a hand on his leg in the car, Victim 1 said, and he began spending nights at the Sandusky home in State College, about 30 miles from his own home in Lock Haven.
Kissing and back rubbing during those overnight visits, when he was in his early teens, progressed to oral sex, he testified, sobbing. He said Sandusky eventually told him: "It's your turn."
"I don't how to explain it, I froze," he said. "My mind is telling me to move but I couldn't do it, I couldn't move."
He told jurors his own behavior worsened, going from a well-behaved child to fights with relatives and bed wetting. His grades deteriorated. After Victim 1 began trying to avoid Sandusky, he asked his mother about websites for child molesters, "to see if Jerry was on there," he testified.
His mother set up a meeting with school guidance counselors, a process that led to the opening of a police investigation and produced criminal charges against Sandusky in November. Messages seeking comment left Thursday for Victim 1's civil lawyers, Slade McLaughlin and Michael Boni, were not immediately returned.
