Spelling and student writing: Does it matter much? Should it matter ...

testing (Medium)With the exception of top brass, very few reporters and editors in newsrooms have offices. Our desks are so close that if I stretch too far, I could knock my colleague Kyle Wingfield in the head. (Not that he couldn?t use a friendly thump to the head now and then. You can read his political blog here.)

So both praise and proscription are often overheard by all in newsrooms. I find it more painful to be a bystander to a pillorying than to be a victim.

One of the worst lashings I ever overheard was directed at a reporter who confused ?it?s? and ?its? in the lead of an important story, a mistake that also slipped by the copy desk.? The editor lamented that the piece could have been a contest entry but for that mistake.

His critique must have stayed with me because I can?t get past the misuse of the words to this day.

And that includes a presentation of new standards in my own school system a while back.? The audience was handed examples of excellent student work. And the writing and reasoning were impressive. However, what I remember most was that the 8th grade paper featured an opening sentence that contained both ?it?s? and ?its,? neither used correctly.

Should it matter?

I remain surprised how often student work chosen for display suffers spelling or grammatical errors. At a school open house, I watched a student PowerPoint on international poverty where I stopped counting after the seventh misspelled word.

Here?s my question to teachers and schools: If you are choosing student work to showcase, is it appropriate to ask students to correct any errors?

The teacher showing us the PowerPoint told us how impressed he was with the perceptions and insights of the sixth graders who created it. I was surprised that he didn?t reference the spelling mistakes, perhaps to explain that he was more concerned with the students? insights. I couldn?t celebrate their original thinking because I was too busy wishing they knew how to spell ?separate? and ?Eritrea.?

I understand that the top goal is to prod students to write, but exquisite writing can be undermined by spelling errors.

Should only perfect papers/PowerPoints be shared or should parents see the students? original work without prettification?

Morris City Council approves new taxing districts for old school ...

The Morris City Council voted Tuesday to create a new taxing district and modify two existing taxing districts in order to finance future demolition and development on the old elementary school property.

During a public hearing on the resolutions, city council members learned more about Tax Increment Financing from the city's financial consultant and heard from citizens who have been involved in efforts to improve the property since the city acquired it from the Morris Area School District nine years ago.

Mark Ruff, senior financial advisor at Ehlers, explained to the city council that TIF is a tool designed to ?level the playing field? ? TIF will allow the City of Morris to use future taxes to pay for demolition and public improvement costs associated with the old elementary school site to turn it into a clean site for development.

?When homes or apartments are built on that site, the increased taxes that will result from them, most of those taxes will not go to the city, county, and school district ? they'll go back to help pay for the cost of the demolition and public improvements,? explained Ruff. Any taxes collected on the land itself will not be part of the TIF district.

In many cases, said Ruff, TIF districts are created on privately-owned land and put in place with an agreement with a developer. In this case, the city owns the property, so the TIF district will be set up in a way that will allow the city to decide whether and how to work with a developer.

?This step is really just giving you the legal authority to take the next steps after this,? Ruff told the council. ?It's not locking you into anything, it's just giving you those options that you'll make decisions on later.?

Financing for work on the old elementary school property will come from three TIF districts ? two that already exist but have met or are close to meeting their financial obligations, and a new district on the property.

Right now, two of the city?s existing TIF districts ? District 4 and District 8 ? generate about $110,000 in revenue each year, which can soon be used for costs associated with the old elementary school property. Both TIF districts have 11 years left until they expire.

The new TIF District 15 is a redevelopment district, which requires that a building on the property is substandard ? ?There aren't many buildings as structurally substandard as [the old elementary school],? said Ruff.

Ruff estimated that District 15 could generate between $100,000 and $200,000 in taxes if the property is fully built to hold 80 housing units. However, Ruff emphasized that number is just a guess at this point and will depend on what happens with the property.

The only ?catch? in using money from any of the districts, explained Ruff, is that District 8 is a housing district. There are some requirements about developing property with affordable housing, if money from that district is used.

If the city moves forward to demolish the old elementary school building and work with a developer to improve the property, the city can negotiate a contract that includes a development schedule, minimum values for the houses that are built, specifications about who pays infrastructure assessments, and a sale price for the land, Ruff said.

Council member Matt Carrington asked whether the TIF district would affect property tax payments for owners in the TIF district.

Ruff said that taxes are always based on value, so while some homes may have a minimum value, they would not pay more or less in taxes just for being in the TIF district.

During the public hearing, Sue Granger and Sue Dieter, representatives from a committee that spent nine years looking at redevelopment options for the property, gave the council an overview of their work and urged council members to take citizen input on the future of the property seriously.

Granger told the council that a group of citizens began meeting in 2001 to look at reusing the old school building and property.

Over their tenure, the committee hosted six public meetings associated with major grants to look at designs and plans for the property, Granger said. The committee also worked to develop multiple master plans for the property, looking at options for reusing the old building or demolishing the building.

?There was a lot of public interest in this property, and I know people are concerned about its future,? said Granger. ?I just want to urge you to not forget about the community and take a thoughtful approach to this. This is a beautiful piece of property, and with the TIF financing, I think you have a powerful tool there.?

Other business

? The council approved final assessments of $2,082 per unit for this summer's improvement project on Pacific Avenue. Most of the cost of the project was covered by state and federal funding, so the nine affected lots were each only assessed for costs related to the sanitary sewer, said Hill.

? The council authorized the engineering firm Bolton and Menk to prepare a report on the city's water and wastewater operations for no more than $15,750.

? The council voted to reimburse the Morris Area Chamber of Commerce $15,377 for work on the city's tourism initiative.

Pacesetter Picks: Wagering Handicapping Help for Greyhound Racing

Wagering Handicapping Help
If you want to win consistently, you should learn.
Here are the Factors to Look for to Give you The Winning Edge;
Palm Beach Kennel Club
Grade

In greyhound racing, the dogs actually grade themselves. When a greyhound begins its racingcareer, it is classified as a maiden, which means non-winner. If it wins, it advances to grade J. When it wins a grade J, it proceeds to D and so forth until it moves up the ladder to the top grade - grade A. A greyhound will also drop in grade during its career. If it fails to come in first, second or third in three starts, or better than two thirds in four starts, the greyhound falls down in grade.

When a greyhound wins and advances in grade, its chances of winning are lowered. Conversely, when a greyhound drops in grade, its chances of winning increase. Smart handicappers always consider a greyhound dropping in grade - it's a good bet.
Early Speed

An early speed greyhound is one that is consistently first, second or third at the first turn. In the program, you can tell the greyhound?s first turn position by looking at the chart and finding the column marked "1/8". Early speed greyhounds will finish in the money approximately 80% of the time. Most problems occur at the first turn when the greyhounds are going at full speed and are usually tightly bunched. So the greyhound that can break out of the box and reach the first turn in front, has a better chance of avoiding first turn problems. So look for early speed- it's ALWAYS a good bet.
Post Position

Post position is selected at random when the races are being drawn. Some greyhounds prefer to run on the inside of the track, while others run the outside and still others prefer mid-track. When the starting box opens, the greyhound will naturally run to the area of the track that it prefers. Thus, when a greyhound that likes the inside position draws an inside box, such as the 1,2 or 3, it is in what is said to be a "favorable post position." If that same greyhound drew an outside box - say the 7 or 8 - it is likely that once the box opens, the greyhound would cross the field attempting to reach the inside. Being in an "unfavorable" post position, it runs a high risk of bumping and colliding with other greyhound. It is a very simple way to gain an advantage,
My next post will show you the grading system. Its going to be?shocking?how simple it really is.

What To Pack For A Safari Trip - Business Insider

Julie Zeveloff/Business Insider

Click the photo to check out my stay at '"the best hotel in the world"

Before taking off on a 10-day press trip to visit safari camps in Tanzania, I worried about having to pack for such a long trip in such a small bag.

Since I was traveling on small charter planes, I had to limit my luggage to a 10 x 12 x 24-inch bag that weighed no more than 33 pounds.

The packing list provided by the Africa Adventure Company, which organized my tour, was pretty comprehensive, and you can find it at the bottom of this post.

There were a few items I was thrilled I had with me, a few I wished I'd thought to bring, and a couple that I probably should have left at home.

Things to pack:

Socks and underwear?? most safari camps offer daily laundry service, but bring enough socks and underwear for the entire trip, especially if you are jumping from camp to camp and don't have time to wait for laundry.

Zip-off pants ? they may not be stylish, but they're incredibly practical in the plains, where temperatures fluctuate widely. There were days where I'd start off wearing a fleece and hat at 6 a.m., and change into shorts and a tank top by lunch.

Light hiking boots ? most of the packing lists I consulted said to bring an old pair of sneakers, but I was glad I wore a lightweight pair of hiking boots. They covered my ankles, were comfortable during walking safaris, and hid the dust nicely.

Detergent travel packs?? for religious reasons, some camps won't wash women's undergarments, so don't get caught off guard.

High-SPF sunscreen ? I normally max out at SPF 15 on the beach, but the sun in Tanzania was strong, even under the roof of a safari vehicle. I used half a tube of SPF 50 and wished I'd brought an even stronger sunscreen.

Insect repellent ? most safari camps are well-stocked with bug spray, but I'd recommend a small bottle of repellent with 100-percent Deet, especially for people traveling in the rainy season.

Headlamp or flashlight ? handy for navigating to the bathroom at night, or for reading in bed. Once I was safely in my mosquito netting at night, the last thing I wanted to do was jump out of bed to turn off the light.

A paperback book or e-reader ? you won't have much downtime for reading during the day, but it was nice to have something to read at night before I fell asleep?? you probably won't find a TV at any safari camp.

Camera-cleaning kit ? make sure you pack a lens wipe and cleaning fluid in your camera bag. Your equipment will get dusty in no time. And throw in some spare camera batteries too. The last thing you want is to run out of juice on a game drive.

Things to leave at home:

Sandals ? flip-flops are OK if you want them to wear in your room, but I never unpacked my sandals. I wore my hiking boots during the day, and at night it was too cold for open-toed shoes.

Make-up and dresses ? leave them home. Make-up is heavy to carry around, and no one at a safari camp dresses up, even at dinner time. Plus, the nights are cold and pants are a better bet.

Bright-colored clothing ? I'd read before leaving that I should pack neutral colors like tan and khaki, and I was glad I did. Bright colors attract animals during game drives, and dark colors attract bugs.

Snacks ? I always travel with a box of granola bars, but that was a mistake on safari. Snacks?? even packaged ones?? attract animals, and they'll sniff them out in your luggage.

Here's the complete packing list from the Africa Adventure Company (click to enlarge):
