ROCKVILLE -- Five homes will be on the annual Rockville Holiday Home Tour and Christmas Bazaar, scheduled for Dec. 1, between 1-6 p.m.

The homes' ages range from the 1830s to one built 11 years ago.

Another was once a place for trade transactions for both the English settlers and Native Americans.

The Christmas Bazaar has been brought back by popular demand.

The artists have donated craft and food items just in time to help with shopping lists.

All proceeds for the Home Tour and Bazaar will be used for Art Gallery in Rockville maintenance and restoration of the second floor.

The restoration project is underway and should be completed during the first part of the next year. A special celebration is currently being planned.

The following is a list of the homes on the tour:

* Dan and Robin Vukovits.

On old State Road 36, the home was built 11 years ago by Joe Miller.

The 4,000-square foot home has four to five bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths and is located on five acres.

The living area is very open and has country decor with neutral tones.

The decorating is a little eclectic with family antiques.

Robin collects Longaberger baskets, Cat's Meow village pieces, Row pottery and quilts.

Christmas collectibles include Dept. 56 North Pole Series, Anna Leigh dolls, Clothique Santas and Byers' Choice carolers.

Aunt Della and Robin's mother helped decorate for Christmas,

* Ted and Darla Burgess.

The home in Bloomingdale was built by James T. Boswell for his wife, Rachel Morris Boswell, in the early 1900s.

This Victorian Queen Anne Cottage contains some original ornate woodwork and light fixtures, which have been rewired.

There are hardwood floors throughout.

It has a cottage theme with soft colors and a casual feel with the addition of some antiques.

When renovated, a large man cave with a loft was added as well as a gourmet kitchen with quartz countertops and custom designed cabinetry.

The master bedroom and bath was updated with a custom vanity with a Bianco Carrara marble top, heated marble flooring and a refinished antique claw foot tub.

Special interests of Darla include gardening, antiques, baskets and collecting Santas.

Assisting in the decorating were daughter Natalie, sister Debbie McKinney, Dixie Hunt and Debbie Davies,

* Zane and Kelly Davies. The home in Bloomingdale was built in the 1830s and has been owned by Ferguson Lumber, Kersey Newlin and Elaine and Bill Davies.

The traditional farmhouse has had several renovations done by Joe Miller.

Five years ago, a garage was added and the kitchen was renovated.

Original fireplaces add to the home's charm.

Three years ago, the master bedroom and bath were renovated, and a stonewall added in the bedroom and bathroom.

The beautiful stairway plus calm and neutral colors also add to the charm of the historic home,

* Joel and Sondra Clendenin.

The 61-year-old home in Bloomingdale was built by Frank Garrard.

It was first lived in by Milton and Mildred Davies and later by Bill and Elaine Davies until 2011.

In 2011, Mike Sandusky Construction remodeled the entire home by adding a master bedroom and bath, dining room, office, a front porch and laundry room.

The color schemes include gallant golds, greens and reds.

The master bedroom is salmon.

The home sits on a beautiful hill surrounded by 23 acres of pasture and farmland.

It is an absolutely wonderful place for children, and

* Wilkins' Mill Guesthouse.

In the Bloomingdale area, the popular-sided structure next to the old Wilkins' Mill was built by George Wilkins in 1842.

It was the center of economic activity where English settlers and Native Americans traded goods.

Now reborn as the Wilkins' Mill Guesthouse, the former general store is the gathering spot for family and friends to enjoy the wooded area and scenic Wilkins' covered bridge.

Notice the two doors used for trading: One for English traders to enter and exit and one half-door for trading with the Native Americans.

Owner Jean Turnmire has preserved the hand-milled paneled walls and pine floors while adding air conditioning, heat, TV and a modern bath with a whirlpool tub.

The main cabin accommodates six, but extra guests can sleep on a sofa bed inside or on bunk beds on the screened-in porch.

A three-stall horse barn and paddocks are available for four-hoofed guests.

Tickets for the Home Tour, with directions and a map, are available at the Rockville Art Gallery on the north side of the square in Rockville. Cost is $10.

Video: Call that a ball? Dogs learn to associate words with objects differently than humans do

Video: Call that a ball? Dogs learn to associate words with objects differently than humans do

Thursday, November 22, 2012

Dogs learning to associate words with objects form these associations in different ways than humans do, according to research published November 21 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Emile van der Zee and colleagues from the University of Lincoln, UK.

Previous studies have shown that humans between the ages of two to three typically learn to associate words with the shapes of objects, rather than their size or texture. For example, toddlers who learn what a 'ball' is and are then presented other objects with similar shapes, sizes or textures will identify a similarly-shaped object as 'ball', rather than one of the same size or texture.

Earlier research with dogs has shown that they can learn to associate words with categories of objects (such as 'toy'), but whether their learning process was the same as that of humans was unknown.

In this new study, the scientists presented Gable, a five year old Border Collie, with similar choices to see if this 'shape bias' exists in dogs. They found that after a brief training period, Gable learned to associate the name of an object with its size, identifying other objects of similar size by the same name. After a longer period of exposure to both a name and an object, the dog learned to associate a word to other objects of similar textures, but not to objects of similar shape.

This is a video about the familiarization with word.Credit: Citation: van der Zee E, Zulch H, Mills D (2012) Word Generalization by a Dog (Canis familiaris): Is Shape Important? PLoS ONE 7(11): e49382. doi:10.1371/ journal.pone.0049382

According to the authors, these results suggest that dogs (or at least Gable) process and associate words with objects in qualitatively different ways than humans do. They add that this may be due to differences in how evolutionary history has shaped human and dog senses of perceiving shape, texture or size.

The bottom line: Though your dog understands the command "Fetch the ball", but he may think of the object in a very different way than you do when he hears it. As the authors explain, "Where shape matters for us, size or texture matters more for your dog. This study shows for the first time that there is a qualitative difference in word comprehension in the dog compared to word comprehension in humans."

Seals gamble with their pups' futures

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

Some grey seal mums adopt risky tactics when it comes to the future of their young, a strategy that can give their pup a real advantage, according to scientists.

Researchers from Durham University, UK, and the University of St Andrews, looking at grey seal colonies in Scotland, found that some seal mothers are flexible in the parenting style they adopt and 'gamble' on the outcome of their actions, whilst other play it safe and steady.

The study is the first to demonstrate how variation in personality traits in large marine mammals in the wild can persist, rather than a single, successful, personality type dominating the population.

The research shows that some seal mothers have a very fixed approach to looking after their pups, and tend to behave in a similar fashion whatever the local conditions on the breeding colony are; whether they are in a crowded and busy location, or in a less disturbed situation. These mums tend to achieve average success in terms of their pups' weight gain (crucial to the future survival of the pup), so that, by-and-large, they generally do well. These mums seem to have a 'play it safe' approach to life.

Some seal mothers have a very different approach. These mums are more flexible and try to adjust their mothering behaviour according to the local conditions. In potentially unpredictable situations, this can be risky; sometimes they get it right and their pups fare very well, but other times they might get it wrong and their pups do rather badly.

The findings, published in the journal PLoS One, show that individual animals can differ markedly in their ability to adjust their behaviour to their local environmental conditions and that large variations in behavioural strategies can persist within a species.

According to the researchers, the results for both extremes of personality show how different types can be maintained by selection. This retains behavioural diversity within a species, potentially making the species more resilient to environmental change.

The results are relevant to environment and conservation policies that use a one-size-fits-all approach, as these may need to be re-evaluated to take into account individual differences in animal personality, the researchers say.

Lead author, Dr Sean Twiss, School of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Durham University, said: "Some mums have a very fixed way of caring for their pups, come what may, whilst others are more flexible. "Seals that 'gamble' and try to fit their behaviour to their immediate surroundings can do very well, if they get it right! However, being flexible can be risky - a mum might 'mis-judge' the conditions and fail to match her behaviour to the prevailing conditions.

"In either resting or disturbed situations, seal mums behaved in very individual ways, some showing high levels of maternal attentiveness, others showing low levels. Some behaved the same when disturbed as they did at rest while other individuals changed their behaviour dramatically when disturbed."

These differences in mothers' behaviour, either fixed or flexible, can have profound effects on their pups. After about 2 weeks of being looked after by their mothers, all pups are left to fend for themselves, and have to teach themselves to feed. The fatter a mum leaves her pup, the more time the pup has to learn, and its chances of surviving are better.

The scientists observed seals on the Scottish island of North Rona during the breeding season over two years. The team observed seals in their natural habitat to analyse responses to unusual stimuli (disturbances) and to assess seal behaviour at rest.

Co-author Dr Paddy Pomeroy said: "What's really interesting about these short term tests is the way behavioural types map onto individual measures of reproductive success. If more flexible mothers are better and worse pup rearers, one of our next tasks will be to see how breeding successes and failures are apportioned over lifetimes, which can only be done in this type of study."

A Minute With: Guillermo del Toro on "Rise of the Guardians"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is known for putting a dark twist on super heroes and children's fantasy, but in "Rise of the Guardians" the producer brings together holiday heroes for a festive adventure.

"Rise of the Guardians," which will be in theaters on Friday, is based on award-winning author William Joyce's "The Guardians of Childhood" books. In the film, traditional characters such as Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, Sandman and Jack Frost join forces to save earth's children from the evil Pitch Black and his band of Nightmares.

In the movie that stars Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Jude Law, Isla Fisher and Hugh Jackman, del Toro, 48, steps back into the executive producer role after directing dark fantasy "Pan's Labyrinth" and the "Hellboy" superhero franchise.

He spoke to Reuters about putting his own stamp on beloved holiday heroes, and why children's films are important to him.

Q: In "Rise of the Guardians," Santa has tattoos, the Easter Bunny is Australian and the Tooth Fairy is half-human, half bird. Not the way most of us grew up imagining them, is it?

A: "We didn't want the characters to have the affections that are given to them in certain cultures. We didn't want to go with the safe Easter Bunny that is now a marketing tool ... We wanted them to represent the world and to geographically make sense. Where would a burrower live, the Outback? The original incarnation of Santa is almost that of a hunter and wild man. It comes from the Nordic and Eastern European notions so we thought it would be great to make him Slavic."

Q: The film is about addressing fear, which is always a challenging lesson for parents to teach their children. Why make this the central theme?

A: "In order to address fear, parents always end up tiptoeing around the subject. Shielding our kids is not the way to go, but you also don't want to send them out unprepared without a healthy sense of self. I thought the movie was a great analogy to many things. It's a great metaphor for kids to interpret the world."

Q: What attracts you to the children's genre?

A: "Some of my favorite authors in literature are guys that are great portrayers of childhood, but not necessarily childish - Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, Roald Dahl. And my movies like 'Hellboy' and 'Hellboy 2' are about misfits coming together. Same with my Spanish movie 'The Devil's Backbone.' So this movie is thematically very much within what I like to do.

"I think that for good or for bad, we spend the rest of our lives dealing with our first 13 years of life, trying to remedy or be lifted by whatever tools we were given when we were kids. Those first years are when we, as adults, sculpt the character of our kids ... In reality, life puts kids in our lives for us to learn from them. There is no braver soul in the world than a kid."

Q: Which "Guardian" do you identify with the most?

A: "I identify with North (Santa Claus). I have the greatest blessing in my life, which is the capacity to remain a child in the way I like to see the world. Like every artist, I have turmoil and I suffer. But ultimately I am able to find magic in the world. When North declares those principles, when he says 'I feel it in my belly,' it's very much something I identify completely with."

Q: Can we expect to see more of this band of heroes in future films?

A: "Obviously the possibility of telling another tale is completely dependent on the studio. But Bill Joyce has written many books on the characters and we are on board to create more and more adventures for them. We've been talking about some storylines. I am eager to tell everyone the story of North."

Q: You recently finished shooting sci-fi adventure "Pacific Rim," due in theaters in 2013, which is your first directing venture since 2008's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army." Why the break?

A: "I went to New Zealand to direct 'The Hobbit' and I was there for two years. I co-wrote the script, and at the end of the process there was a moment of decision where I really wanted to pursue something else and not keep waiting ('The Hobbit' production was delayed due to movie studio MGM's financial troubles).

"Then I spent over a year trying to get a movie called 'Mountains of Madness' off the ground. That didn't happen. Next it took another two years to get 'Pacific Rim' to the screen. But in the meantime, I co-wrote three novels, produced three movies and wrote a TV series. It's been a very busy five years."
