Fred Meyer: Back to School Shopping Tips + (2) $50 Gift Card ...

DSCN1312 (800x592)It?s not even August 1st and we?re nearly done with our school supply shopping. Call me crazy, but I love the smell of a new box of crayons, the possibilities that a blank notebook presents, and packs of pens that haven?t yet lost their lids!

Every year, we do our school supply shopping at Fred Meyer.

100_3693 (800x600)The back to school section is always spacious, well laid out ? and most of all, offers fabulous prices!

Pay particular attention to these:

DSCN0926 (800x641) (2)Price Blaster items tend to be those ?wow? prices. The sign will tell you how many you can buy (if there?s a limit) and if you look in the lower right-hand corner you?ll see a ?good through? date. I often find that the Price Blaster deals will extend beyond the regular ad cycle ? sometimes a couple weeks or more.

DSCN0928 (587x800)It?s hard to imagine I?ll be sending her off to Kindergarten this fall! She?s mostly excited, but a little nervous. She does enjoy a good arts & craft project, so I brought her school supply shopping with me so she can get more excited about all the fun supplies she?ll be using at school! Given the cheap prices of the supplies, we do like to stock up on extra crayons, pens, markers, and paper to keep at home.

DSCN0929 (800x600)And, at $0.19 each, we *might* have nabbed a few notebooks, even though they?re not on our list! In fact, as I type this post, sister is downstairs going to town on a $0.19 notebook with a new pack of $0.49 Crayola crayons. Some of these extra supplies will come in handy for our upcoming road trip in August, too.

DSCN0927 (600x800)I do have a few tips for you when it comes to school supply shopping at Fred Meyer:

  • If for any reason stock is low for a particular item, make sure to check the Arts & Crafts aisles! I found crayons there as well as in the seasonal section, for instance.
  • Pay attention to any tear pad or store coupons you see on store shelves. Last week, I found a $0.50/1 tearpad coupon for a 4-pack of highlighters that were already on sale for $1.49! Today, I found a 20% off your purchase of $20 or more store coupon on the shelves.
  • Haunt the clearance sections for supplies. Today I found ?trapper keeper? style binders in the 50% off Home Clearance section near craft supplies. They were about $5 vs. spendier versions out in the display area. I also like checking out the clearance section in the home organizational aisle. I ended up picking up a couple cute organization baskets for $2.50 each versus more expensive mail sorters in the office section.
  • Make sure to check out all the options for a given item on your list. For instance, if pencils are on your list, you might find them in the seasonal area in a bin, but you?d also find them in the seasonal section against the wall, on the office supply aisle and possibly, down the main aisle of your store where promotional items are kept. Checking each of these locations means you?re more likely to find exactly what you?re looking for at the price you can afford. Another item that you?ll find in several places is backpacks. I found them in seasonal, in accessories, near the shoe department, and also down the main aisle.
  • Follow my blog! I share Fred Meyer deals weekly here by Saturday night. Through Labor Day, I?m including a special back to school section highlighting Fred Meyer?s school supply deals. (See this week?s Fred Meyer back to school supply deals if you?re interested!)
  • Sign up to receive Fred Meyer?s emails. You can receive updates on upcoming promotions, get exclusive coupons, and more via your email. Sign up at FredMeyer.com.

salvationarmyI also want to highlight that once again, Fred Meyer is teaming with the Salvation Army to help kids from low-income families in our communities with school supplies. Since 2010, Fred Meyer has been able to donate over 100,000 school supplies to kids in the Northwest thanks to this partnership! Perhaps you?ve seen some donation boxes or signs at your store like the ones pictured above?

They are in particular need of:

  • Pencils
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Colored Pencils
  • Notebook Paper
  • Crayons
  • Erasers
  • Glue Sticks

Each of these items is priced ridiculously low right now. Here?s what I was able to pick up for right around $20 at my Fred Meyer store, thanks to their sales and Price Blaster items:

DSCN1307 (800x600)I have to admit, folks, I was a little sad that when I went to put my supplies in the donation box, it was virtually empty today (except for a couple gum wrappers? really, people?). I figure if even 100 of you reading this would donate two boxes of Crayola crayons (they?re $0.49 this week, limit 4), that would mean 200 kids could get a new box of crayons for school!

I hope that while you consider shopping Fred Meyer for your own kids? supplies this year, you?ll consider picking up a few extras and dropping them in that donation box!

Finally, you might want to check out the Support your Schools Giveaway Fred Meyer is running right now. Your school could win a $1,000 gift card which would go a LONG way at Fred Meyer!

Two lucky Coupon Project readers will each receive a $50 Fred Meyer Gift Card to help with back to school shopping and/or donating a few extra supplies to Salvation Army!

To enter, all you need to do is leave a comment on this post. For fun, I?d love to hear about what you love about back to school, why you love shopping at Fred Meyer for back to school, or the most random thing that?s on your kid?s school supply list this year. (Basically anything you want on this topic will suffice!)

Limit one comment per person, please. The two winners will be selected by random draw next Tuesday, August 6th at 5pm PST and notified shortly thereafter by email. Please, please, leave an email address you regularly check. I can?t tell you how many times I never hear from the winners and have to select new ones! Don?t let this happen to you!

Good luck!

Disclosure: Fred Meyer provided me with a gift card to facilitate my review and shopping trip as well as the winners? prizes. No other compensation was received for today?s post. For more information about how this site makes money (and does not make money), you can refer to my Disclosure Policy. Prices depicted above on Fred Meyer signs or display shelves are subject to change at any time and without warning. Prices shown above may not be current. The Random Act of Kindness Revealed by This $306 Receipt

An elderly man walking his dog in the southern Israeli desert town of Arad last week passed a gas station where he saw a bus full of soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces on their way to weekend leave with their families after three weeks of training. While crossing their path, the man appeared to make a spontaneous decision that made some 50 soldiers and their driver very happy.

Matan Mymon, who works at the Dor Alon gas station and market in Arad, posted on Facebook what happened next, a post that's received more than 17,000 Likes and counting.

The man secretly ordered 51 sandwiches and a crate of colas for them and their driver, a purchase totaling 1,099 New Israeli Shekels, or $306. Sales clerk Mymon was so touched by the man's generous act, he took a photo of the receipt and posted it on Facebook.

Man Secretly Treats 50 Soldiers to Sandwiches, Pastries and Colas While their Bus Was at a Pit StopGas-Station-Receipt

Israeli gas station clerk Matan Mymon posted a photo of this receipt listing the sandwiches, pastries and soft drinks an anonymous man bought for soldiers on their way to weekend leave. (Image: Facebook)

He writes: "I, Matan Mymon, who works at Dor Alon [gas station] in Arad was witness to the most unselfish, most considerate, most spontaneous, most appreciative, most crazy most loving, most touching moment in the history of gas stations..!"

"An older man whose name will remain with us went for the usual walk with his dog. Part of his walking path crosses Alonit where I work. Such a coincidence, a bus full of soldiers from the paratroopers brigade (excuse me for not seeing which battalion they are from) stopped precisely then. At that moment, the older man approached me and asked for two crates of cola and 51 sandwiches (for the driver too) for the soldiers, at his expense. Amazing. The receipt is attached," Mymon added.

Two soldiers who say they were on the bus posted their thanks to the anonymous donor on Facebook.

Yoav Greenblatt writes: "And I, Yoav Greenblatt, was on the bus...it was after a very hard week. After three poor hours of sleep while sitting on the bus, at 5 in the morning I opened my eyes to crates of cola, pastries, four types of sandwiches, commotion and smiles on the bus. Sigh, I feel proud."

Almog Frangie wrote: "I was on the bus...it was really exciting, a moment that you appreciate after 21 days in the army [without going home]. Amazing. Thank you."

Omer Galron who wasn't on the bus addressed his comment to the anonymous gentleman: "You made their weekend sweeter."

The post elicited other stories of generosity including from Maayan Schreiber who wrote: "I'm a manager at McDonald's and a similar thing happened to me. Four soldiers stood at the counter and ordered meals.? The customer standing behind them waited for them to finish ordering and paid for all of their meals. There are still good people out there!"

Sarit Avraham wrote: "As the mother of a soldier, a personal 'thank you' from me to the noble gentleman . Chapeau and all the power to you for sharing."

TheBlaze contacted the Arad store on Monday which verified that the incident indeed occurred.

What's their beef? Striking fast food workers say low wages

Fast food

JUSTIN LANE / EPA

Protesters gather outside of a Wendy's restaurant as part of a one day strike calling for higher wages for fast food workers in New York City on Monday. The strike, which is taking a place cities across the U.S. aims to increase workers' wages to $15 an hour.

You may find yourself waiting longer for McNuggets or a Whopper this week as thousands of workers in seven cities around the country strike for $15 an hour and the right to unionize.

Building on the momentum of an initial strike last November in New York City, organizers say dozens of restaurants in New York City, Chicago, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Detroit and Flint, Mich., will be affected by waves of worker walkouts over the course of the week.

?These workers need a raise and they need representation in the workplace,? said Martin Rafanan, community director for STL735. The acronym stands for ?St. Louis Can?t Survive on $7.35,? referring to Missouri?s minimum wage. Rafanan said the group, which plans to strike today and tomorrow, hopes to build on a May strike when about 100 workers walked off the job.

?In this particular set of actions this week, we?re expecting to strike 50 stores and between 100 and 200 workers,? he said, adding that the response to the May strike was greater than anticipated. The group only expected 40 or 50 workers to walk out. ?It ended up being a much bigger thing.?

Today?s action could see 500-plus workers at dozens of New York City fast food restaurants abandoning their posts for picket lines, said Jonathan Westin, director of Fast Food Forward and executive director of New York Communities For Change.

At a McDonald's across the street from Yankee Stadium, several dozen people chanted, "We can't survive on $7.25."

In April, 400 fast food employees walked off the job in New York. At twice the size of the group?s inaugural walkout last November, local organizers called that event the biggest fast food strike in the country ? until now.

These actions are designed to call attention to ?the contradictions between the folks at the top? and the workers themselves living in poverty,? Westin said.

Spokespeople from McDonald?s and Yum Brands (parent company of Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut) referred questions to their trade group, the National Restaurant Association. The association did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

?As a corporation, we respect the rights of all workers; however, Burger King Corp. does not make hiring, firing or other employment-related decisions for our franchisees ? Burger King restaurants offer compensation and benefits that are consistent with the QSR industry,? a company spokesperson said in a statement via email. QSR is industry jargon for quick-service restaurant, or fast food.

Wendy?s is ?still assessing the situation,? company spokesman Bob Bertini said via email. ?We have no additional comment.?

This week?s actions come on the heels of a much-lambasted budget guide for McDonald?s workers that recommended they get a second job and budgeted just $20 a month for health insurance, and a report by the National Employment Law Project showing that the vast majority of fast food positions are dead-end jobs. Earlier NELP research found that nearly 60 percent of post-recession job creation was for work that pays an hourly wage of $13.83 or less.

An open letter signed by more than 100 economists and published this month by the University of Massachusetts, Amherst?s Political Economy Research Institute titled, ?Economists in Support of a $10.50 U.S. Minimum Wage,? makes the case that raising wages would add just five cents to the price of a Big Mac.

Although fast food jobs are often thought of as work that provides teenagers with spending money, the average age of today?s fast food worker is 32, the paper said, which has much grimmer implications. ?If a worker today is employed full time for a full 52-week year at a minimum wage job today, she or he is making $15,080. This is 19 percent below the official poverty line for a family of three,? the paper said.

The Associated Press contributed reporting.

New reality show to explore the world of super-wealthy Russians living in London

Latest reality show looks at wealthy Russians in London
Billionaire couple Kamaliya and Zahoor will be the focus of Meet The Russians (Picture: Fox)

Fox has commissioned Meet The Russians, a nine-part documentary providing ?privileged access to the wonderful world of select, wealthy Russians, Ukrainians and other post-Soviets living in London?.

Airing in September, the series will centre on Ukrainian pop star Kamaliya and her billionaire husband Zahoor, a couple who claim bathing in champagne is great for the skin and once purchased two private jets in one day.

It is estimated that 300,000 Russians now live in London, with a number of these being considered super-wealthy.

Describing it as ?the show that makes the Made In Chelsea cast look like paupers?, Fox said of Meet The Russians: ?Much has been reported about Russians living in London over the years and what their lifestyle entails. Yet until now, this world has never been documented in a dedicated series. With Meet The Russians, this is all about to change.

?The series will give viewers unprecedented access and take them into the heart of a fascinating, glamorous, super-rich world we know exists but have never really witnessed. From the mega rich to the beautiful fashionistas, the high-end party planners and the hottest properties and private schools, Meet The Russians will gain an understanding of the Russian ?scene? in London.?

Other cast members include a flamboyant fashion photographer who moved to London with his boyfriend after Russian Parliament passed a law in 2011 that made public displays of affection by same sex couples punishable with a ?10,000 fine.

Meet The Russians is the latest reality show based in the London area, following the popular series Made In Chelsea and The Only Way Is Essex.

Fit And Well Idaho: Breast Cancer Awareness

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) If you put eight women in a room, one will be diagnosed with breast cancer. If that isn't alarming, breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women.
But, with early detection, mortality rates have been decreasing over the past two decades.

Of all the imaging centers in Idaho, only four carry the distinction of Breast Imaging Center of Excellence and one of those is in Twin Falls.

According to Marla Van Tassel, a breast biopsy coordinator for St. Luke's, "that means we provide mammogram services, ultrasound biopsy services along with stereo biopsy guided services."

For some women, a mammogram can be a frightening and invasive procedure.

But St. Luke's Magic Valley Women's Imaging Center is hoping to ease those fears.

"I think we have a great, inviting environment where women can feel comfortable when they come in to get their mammograms. We have experienced techs that do a great job."

Most mammograms are quick, lasting between five and ten minutes.

Marla Van Tassell also goes out into the community to promote the importance of mammograms.

"We invite people to invite us to their community groups so we can promote mammograms and let them know how important mammograms are...it's important to understand early detection is the key. If we can catch it early, then we have a greater chance of catching it."

Being overweight, frequent alcohol consumption, even combined hormone replacement therapy are all risk factors.

With breast cancer being the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, there's never been a better time to take care of your health.

Local awareness programs include the 900 Women campaign, Women's Health Check and the Diane Bolt Fund.

Tough Enough to Wear Pink will return to the Twin Falls County Fair on August 29th.

Suspicious packages found at homes of 2 Kronos Canada managers

MONTREAL ? The S?ret? du Qu?bec has been called by local police to examine two suspicious packages found Friday morning at the homes of managers at Kronos Canada Inc., where unionized plant workers have been locked out since mid-June.

Constable Serge C?t? of the R?gie intermunicipale de police Richelieu-Saint-Laurent said a security company retained by Kronos Canada advised the South Shore police force of the first package, ?about the dimensions of a shoebox,? about 8:30 a.m.

It was reported found near a vehicle parked at a manager?s home on Duvernay St., in Verch?res.

A second call regarding a ?very similar package? ? this one spotted by a police patrol officer ? was received at 9:44 a.m., regarding another Kronos manager?s residence on Laure Conan St. in adjacent Varennes, C?t? said.

A security perimeter has been established around both sites, with ?some evacuations? in both instances, C?t? said, pending the SQ?s arrival.

?They are on their way,? C?t? said shortly before noon.

About 320 workers at the Kronos Canada plant in Varennes have been locked out since June 13.

The plant produces titanium pigments, used to whiten everything from household paints to plastics.

The primary issues in the labour dispute include a company plan to hire more contract workers, according to the union, the National Union of employees of Kronos Canada.

Kronos Canada locked the workers out shortly after they had rejected a contract offer by a 93-per-cent vote.

An earlier version of this story stated that the CSN represented Kronos workers. Although the CSN is affiliated with the National Union of employees of Kronos Canada, it does not speak for these workers. The Gazette regrets the error.

Gophers coach Kill 'doing great' in terms of health

?

? Gophers football coach Jerry Kill opened Wednesday?s appearance at Big Ten media days by saying how excited he is about the program?s progress heading into his third season.

Before long, a reporter asked, ?More importantly than football, how is your health??

?I?m doing great,? Kill said. ?I appreciate you asking. Things are going great for me. And I?ve got a great doctor that is a specialist in epilepsy. ? I may not look like it, but I feel like I?m in the best shape of my life, so I?m looking forward to the season.?

Setbacks at center

Kill confirmed that senior center Zach Mottla had to retire from football after having a setback in his recovery from a compound leg fracture.

?I went up to see him when they took the screws out and had to re-break it,? Kill said. ?He?s a pretty mentally tough kid. He?s handled things pretty well.?

Junior center Brian Bobek is questionable for the season because of myocarditis, an infection in the heart. It?s a serious condition, but Bobek is expected to make a full recovery. He had to sit out last year after transferring from Ohio State, but he could redshirt this season and still have two years of eligibility remaining.

Jon Christenson handled first-team center duties during spring practice. Other center options include Zac Epping, Tommy Olson and Ernie Heifort.

More receiver options

Incoming freshmen Donovahn Jones and Chris Streveler both were recruited as quarterbacks, but both will see time at wide receiver when preseason camp starts Aug. 2, Kill said.
