The Motivation Myth | The Best Life Blog: Fitness, Weight-Loss and ...

Posted By Juli Dimos on October 31, 2012

For most of the last six years, I?ve attempted to lose weight and get in shape. There was one major problem: Despite my efforts, the motivation to stick to it was like a myth, a fantasy, an ever-elusive unicorn. It was simply impossible to grasp.

Nine weeks ago, when my husband finished school, that mythical unicorn finally materialized. It was a beautiful creature, full of promise and hope. Was it pure magic? Had the planets finally aligned? Had some higher power heard my prayers and decided to finally take pity on me?

It was nothing quite so mystical or cosmic. My motivation spiked as my schedule cleared. When my husband was in school, there was too much going on?there was no room for error. Even the slightest scheduling change made it impossible to keep up a workout routine. I was simply overextended.

Now, I?m reveling in my newfound freedom. In fact, I?ve made myself some promises about my time and my priorities. Here are three that you might find useful.

  1. Edit my schedule ruthlessly.
I?m an emotional scheduler?I want to do everything. But everything is no good for my weight loss goals.? And it?s not fun either. In the fashion and writing world, editing is a constant companion?one that hurts but always results in something better. I?m learning to edit my schedule with the goal of leaving 30 percent of my time free.
  2. Visualize my week.
Visualizing the times in my week when I am probably going to be stressed helps me with step one. Is there something in my schedule that seems innocuous but really causes the most anxiety? I might consider removing that event entirely if possible or figuring out a way around it. If I can?t remove it, I might spend some extra time prepping for it.
  3. Be honest with myself when I?m about to derail.
For the last nine weeks, I?ve taken on a six-day-a-week exercise routine, as well as eating very healthfully. I then attempted to add an elimination diet (under the guidance of my nutritionist) on top of this to make sure I wasn?t allergic to anything. I started feeling frustrated and angry, and my unicorn disappeared. I stopped the elimination diet, and just like that, my motivation returned. The elimination diet was one thing too many. The lesson here: Know your limits, and if you feel yourself pushing up against them, take a step back.

What promises can you make to yourself to maintain?or welcome back?your motivation?

In Sandy's path, reality of destruction sets in

Residents who are cleaning up from Sandy are just starting to cope with the disaster across the East Coast.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

From the devastated New Jersey shore to eerily empty lower Manhattan, tens of millions of Americans lived through Sandy's fury and were trying to come to grips with its destruction as the storm waters slowly receded.

The impact of the storm was virtually without parallel in the densely populated tristate region of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, with its destructive winds, heavy flooding and raging fires. Farther afield, powerful gusts felled trees and knocked out power for up to 8.2 million residents?across?the eastern United States, while heavy snow made travel treacherous at?higher?elevations. Nationwide at least 46 were confirmed dead of storm-related causes.

"This was literally the storm of our lifetime," said Longport, N.J., Mayor Nick Russo, as he surveyed the damage on debris-littered streets of his Atlantic coast town Tuesday. "No one has seen this type of damage, not even in the 1962 storm. The amount of sand, wood and concrete that has actually come up from the streets ? it's not a good scene."

Two hundred miles to the north in Mastic Beach, N.Y., Donna Vollaro, 53, covered her face with her hands and sobbed as she walked through her ranch-style home, which had been inundated by several feet of water.

The water had receded by Tuesday afternoon but left the Long Island house filled with mud. Everything inside destroyed.

"My bed was floating around in three feet of water. The floors are buckled. The walls are caved in. Everything I own is gone," she said.

Vollaro, who is disabled and unemployed, has no homeowner's insurance and said she recently spent her savings on renovating the home. Inside, the refrigerator lay on its side, the couch was soaked and the boiler was destroyed.

Superstorm Sandy made landfall Monday evening on a destructive and deadly path across the Northeast.

"Now I have nowhere to go. Just the clothes on my back. That's what I have," she said.

    'Like a tsunami'
On New York's Coney Island, Mordechai Deutscher recalled watching floodwaters burst through the glass front doors of the Mermaid Manor Home for Adults, about two blocks from the famed boardwalk. Residents had been evacuated to upper floors.

"Everything was fine and dandy yesterday until high tide," said Deutscher, 58, administrator of the?home two blocks from the famed boardwalk. "All of a sudden within five minutes it was like a tsunami."

Sal and Lori Novello rode out the storm in their Long Island home, with candles providing the only light and a wind-up radio their connection to the outside world. Sal Novello, 50, said when water started rushing into their 5,000-square-foot Dutch colonial, "it sounded like Niagara Falls." They ended up with seven feet of water in the basement.

"They kind of warned us, and everybody knew it was coming," said Novello, a construction executive who lives in n Lindenhurst, N.Y.?"Unfortunately it was everything they said it was."

One day after Sandy slammed into the East Coast, NBC News' Lester Holt reports on the record-breaking hybrid storm system that swamped neighborhoods, paralyzed the nation's biggest city, and left millions of families from the Carolinas to Ohio without power.

Ken Pagliarulo, a 34-year-old computer consultant in Lindenhurst, watched from his window Monday night as a house burned to the ground. Water filled his living room and totaled his car in the garage. He shut down the power, shut down the gas and ran generators for electricity.

    "Insane," he said.

In Washington, D.C., as Sandy made landfall, Russ Kelley had two bad options: stay inside after a giant oak fell on his roof or dash outside where massive winds whipped three downed ? and live ? power lines not far from his front door.

    Jason Decrow / AP

Firefighters work at the scene of a house fire in in Lindenhurst, New York, Monday.

"Here's the thing ? the fire department advised us all to come out of our row houses because of this tree lying on top. But then there's this hurricane outside with 60 mile-per-hour gusts, still pouring rain, a couple of live wires down in the street and another live wire out in my yard," said Kelley.

"It seemed just safer to be in my house, tree and all," he said.

So Kelley brushed aside the wet oak limbs and took his dog, Clinton, back into the living room ? just below the fallen, 60-foot tree ? as his TV screen continued to flash images of the historic storm that had just crashed into his life.

    Dangling crane
In Manhattan, the experience was sometimes more surreal than perilous, after subways and businesses shut down and power outages afflicted much of the city.

In the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, retired local newspaper publisher Robert Trentlyon and his wife planned to stay in their darkened apartment Tuesday, although their son lives in a nearby complex that generates its own power. The Trentlyons had phone service and running water, and they routinely use the stairs to their brownstone apartment.

Robert is 83, but, he said: "I'm a good 83," as he planned to grab a flashlight and check whether the building's basement had flooded.

An apartment building sits damaged in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood Monday.

Some 900 guests were forced to evacuate Manhattan's Le Parker Meridien hotel because a storm-damaged crane dangled dangerously from a high-rise apartment building under construction nearby.

Authorities said they were worried the wilted crane above would tumble down, perhaps pinball into neighboring buildings and crush everything in its path on the ground.

The skyscraper, near Carnegie Hall, is officially called One57 but has been dubbed a "global billionaires' club" because its upper floors will include nine enormous, posh apartments ? all sold to billionaires.

"So all of our hurricane food is upstairs in our hotel, we're on a quest to find another hotel, and technically, I'm homeless,"?said Al Lewis, a guest from Denver who had been staying in the hotel with his wife and two children.?"I'm homeless because of these billionaires next door. But, everyone's going to get displaced by a billionaire someday ? it's just my time, I guess."

    Baking in the cold
Several states to the south, freezing bands of the same gargantuan storm began dumping snow onto tiny Belington, W.Va.,?(population 1,900). By 3 a.m. Tuesday, when Charlotte Cummings arrived to work at the Goody Basket,?her bakery,?there was already?six inches of snow?on the ground.

"Six inches is nothing for around here," Cummings said. "So I just started my day, started baking. Then, at about 8 a.m. the power went out because the snow is so wet and so many branches are coming down. Thankfully, I have gas so I could just keep going."

    Bebeto Matthews / AP

The tail end of an SUV is perched on top of a mailbox in New York's Coney Island Monday.

By morning, a foot of snow had fallen ? and another foot or more was expected before the slow-moving storm lumbered on. After daylight, three young men walked past the Goody Basket and told Cummings: "This is the first open sign we've seen!"

"They had some pepperoni rolls and some chocolate chip cookies," Cummings said. "I stayed open till about 2 o'clock (p.m.). In fact, before I came home, I just pulled the last pan out of the oven ? three dozen pepperoni rolls."

Kelvin Redmond, an accountant and associate minister at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Rockville Centre on Long Island, lives two blocks from the water in a three-story split level, but hadn't been able to get back to check on damage because the streets were still impassable.

Ahead of the storm, he shut off all the power and moved his belongings, computers and irreplaceable items like photos to the third floor.

"It looks like it may be a total loss," he said Tuesday. "But I still have my health and strength. I'm also a minister, so I still ? it's going to be a good word on Sunday."

NBC's Kari Huus, contributor Bill Briggs and The Associated Press contributed to this story.

Reporter accused of plagiarism tells his side of the story | Poynter.

Joe Milliken has spent months trying to get his career back on track, but he says a post I wrote about him is making that difficult.

In March I wrote about a front page column by the editor of the Eagle Times, a small New Hampshire paper that accused Milliken of stealing quotes and passing them off as his own. Then-editor Roger Carroll, no longer with the paper, wrote that, ?If one of my reporters did what Compass Sports Editor Joe Milliken did last week, they?d be fired on the spot.?

Carroll?s issue was that Milliken did not attend the basketball game he wrote about, but his story for the Compass included quotes that had been gathered by one of Carroll?s reporters. Carroll reached out to Milliken and his boss at the Compass to express his concerns. Milliken apologized at the time, but Carroll wanted him to admit to plagiarism. Milliken didn?t believe he plagiarized and declined to admit to that offense.

?I just couldn?t bring myself to look the other way anymore,? Carroll wrote. ?Especially once it became clear ? after a series of maddening email exchanges ? that he would apologize for just about anything, but not for stealing my work.?

I contacted Milliken at the time, but he declined to comment because he said he was looking into his legal options. My post was published with quotes I gathered from Carroll. That was in March.

About a month ago, Milliken contacted me to ask if I could take down the story. He said he?s had difficulty finding work and lost many of his contracts due to Carroll?s accusation, which he says is false. Each time he has an opportunity for a new writing job, the people looking to hire him inevitably come across my post, he said. Milliken believes this results in him not getting the job or assignment.

?The accusations that Carroll made against me have greatly affected both my professional and personal life,? he said in a email interview. ?As a freelance writer working from home, I lost all of my local freelance newspaper accounts (six in all) except for one. In every case, they simply said, ?Joe, we like you, we like your writing and we believe you when you say that you didn?t plagiarize on purpose, but this situation is too ?hot? right now and we have to protect our investment.? ?

Our approach at Poynter.org is to correct stories that are wrong and update stories with new information, but we typically deny requests to unpublish material. We explore alternatives, particularly when the story is accurate and complete but an?embarrassment to a source or subject. We may also update the old story and create a new one, which is what we decided to do in this case once Milliken wanted to talk to us after setting aside his initial plan to sue Carroll, which proved too expensive and unpredictable, he said.

He wants to tell his side of the story and restore his reputation, and I agreed to write a follow-up article with his point of view.

I also reached out to Carroll to see how he now feels about his column on Milliken. Carroll is no longer at the paper, but the staff there forwarded my questions to him by email. He hasn?t replied, nor did the current leadership at the paper offer any comment.

    Milliken?s perspective

The first thing Milliken wants people to know is he did in fact make it clear the quotes in question came from elsewhere.

?I have been a sports editor/writer in the Southern Vermont/Southwestern New Hampshire areas since 2005, and had written a ?round up? article about a high school basketball game in Townshend, Vermont? a game in which I did not attend personally,? he said. ?In the article I talked about the game and gave statistics, and also included a couple coaches? quotes that I saw in Carroll?s article.?

?However,? he continued, ?after the quotes I stated ?told reporters after the game? indicating that they were not quotes given to me personally. I also included in the article, a couple ?stock photos? that were clearly labeled as images that were not taken at this particular game. Therefore, why would I include photos that were clearly not from that game, if I was trying to give the impression that I was there? When I wrote that article, I can honestly tell you that I was not thinking ?how can I make it look like I was at that game?? That thought never entered my mind.?

Milliken says Carroll called him up after article was published, and warned him that he was planning to write a column about what he saw as plagiarism.

?He called me a liar and attempted to intimidate and get me to admit that I was ?intentionally trying to give the impression that I was at that game,? and that was not the case and that is not what I apologized for,? Milliken said. ?I apologized to him for the misunderstanding and that he took my article the wrong way, but I also repeatedly told him that it was not my intention to give the impression that I was at the game, hence, my submitting of photos with the article that were not even from said game.?

The conversation was heated, and Milliken says he apologized repeatedly. But he declined to admit he?d tried to pretend he was at the game, or that he plagiarized. That apparently led Carroll to write his column.

?Several times over, I apologized for the misunderstanding ? he told me that he didn?t think my apology was sincere enough, so [Carroll said] ?it looks like I am going to have to write this article?? and hung up on me,? Milliken said. ?He even pettily accused me of putting in for the mileage as if I had gone to the game.?

Milliken says the fact that he noted that the quotes came from elsewhere meant the accusations were unjustified and inaccurate.

However, that wasn?t the only accusation Carroll made about Milliken?s work.

?Milliken?s been taking stuff out of other papers and passing it off as his own for years,? wrote Carroll, citing the fact that other unnamed local journalists had expressed that sentiment to him.

?I was really upset when Carroll accused me of this, so I approached a couple local sports writers ? who I had been working alongside for years and asked them directly if they thought I had been doing this,? Milliken told me. ?To my dismay, a couple of these gentlemen, indeed, said they thought I was guilty of this.?

Milliken said he had no idea people had concerns about his reporting.

?I would see these reporters every week at local games and have friendly conversations with them and yet no one, ever once, said to me that they thought I was stealing their information. Not Once!,? Milliken said.

He?s now aware of the concerns and regrets that it was an issue. Carroll?s column helped raise awareness, but for Milliken it also painted him as a repeat plagiarist ? an accusation he rejects.

Milliken hopes that by speaking publicly he?ll be able to win back some writing contracts, and his reputation.

?People around town still walk up to me and ask why I am not covering local sports anymore, and that they miss my sports writing and photography about their kids, grand children, friends,? he said.

Milliken is bothered by the fact that Carroll moved on from the Eagle Times, leaving him to deal with the aftermath.

?In closing, what makes this all even tougher for me to swallow is the fact that both Carroll, and the general manager who let that article run on the front page, are not even at the Eagle Times publication anymore,? he said. ?So here I am, still a member of this community and wanting to do my writing and to positively promote the good things around me, and I can?t because none of these publications will currently accept my work. Whereas Mr. Carroll is nowhere to be found.?

Pakistani terrorist offers storm aid, U.S. says no thanks

The U.S. has turned down an offer of post-Hurricane Sandy assistance from one of the world's most wanted men, a Pakistani terror leader with a $10 million U.S. bounty on his head.

Hafiz Saeed, an Islamist militant who is alleged to have masterminded the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that left more than 160 people dead, issued a written statement Wednesday saying his organization was willing to send supplies and volunteers to help the U.S. East Coast recover.

"We are ready to send food items, medicines and doctors to the U.S. for the people affected by the storm," said Saeed. "America [may] fix bounties on our heads but as followers of the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him), we feel it is our Islamic duty to help Americans trapped in a catastrophe." Saeed noted that the charity he heads had provided aid in Sri Lanka and Indonesia after the 2004 tsunami.

Saeed is the founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba, a terror group banned by the Pakistani government, and still heads its charity wing, Jamaat ud Dawa. Earlier this year the U.S. State Department offered a $10 million reward for information leading to his capture or arrest.

After Saeed's offer of assistance, the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan declined his help via Twitter. "We respect the Islamic tradition of help to the needy," said the tweet, "but we can't take Hafiz Saeed's offer seriously."

Saeed founded Lashkar-e-Taiba more than 25 years ago and has mounted many attacks against India as part of a campaign to wrest the Kashmir region from Indian control. Saeed is accused of masterminding the Nov. 26, 2008 terror attacks on the city of Mumbai. Ten gunmen took part in the multi-day assault, which cost the lives of at least 166 people, including six Americans. The lone surviving attacker, who faces a death penalty, has accused Saeed of hatching the plot.

Pakistan kept Saeed under house arrest after the attacks for some months but then released him. He maintains a high public profile inside the country. In September, he led street protests against the anti-Islam film "Innocence of Muslims."

On April 2, when the State Department announced its $10 million reward for Saeed, it said the bounty had "everything to do with Mumbai and his brazen flouting of the justice system."

Saeed responded to the announcement of the bounty by publicly taunting the U.S. government.

"I am here, I am visible," said Saeed on April 4. "America should give that reward money to me."

"I will be in Lahore tomorrow. America can contact me whenever it wants to," said Saeed. He also expressed surprise that the U.S. did not know where he was, offered to face charges in an American court, and said America had "gone blind" because of its hatred of Islam.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner reacted to Saeed's taunts by stressing that the reward was for information leading to his arrest or conviction, not his location. "We all know where he is," said Toner. "Every journalist in Pakistan knows where he is." Toner said it was unfortunate that Saeed was free to give press conferences, but that the U.S. hopes "to put him behind bars" and is seeking information that would "give the Pakistani government the tools to arrest him."

The $10 million bounty makes Saeed among the top five most-wanted on the U.S. terror list; al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri is worth a $25 million reward. The U.S. also offered up to $2 million for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Saeed's brother-in-law, who is the deputy leader of Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Successful Value Investing | Regional Economic Development ...

Possibly the most intricate component of becoming a value investor is completing the basic research to properly evaluate a company. You must check that a company is fundamentally sound, that its financial statements are in top condition, and that it has a competitive edge over its competitors. All that research necessitates that you read through annual reports for the organization that you are looking at, as well as its competition, to help you evaluate risk. After all of that is finished and you?ve discovered that your particular company is surely a high quality one to invest in, you will need to determine whether the current share price is trading at a discount. If the share price is not trading at a discount, it makes no real sense to acquire the stock at a premium. That would eliminate the reason for investing in the company in which its potential growth is already priced into the stock price. These are the simple tips you?ll want to consider.

Screen Your Companies. The real key to become a smart value investor is always to initially filter out companies that will not be a suitable match and tend to be not high-quality value investing investments. This would involve the removal of companies without any earnings, micro-cap stocks, corporations where return-on-equity is less than 10%, high debt-to-equity ratios, and corporations without continuous positive free cash flow. The good thing is you can find complimentary resources available on the market that really help with your screening process and several brokerage companies have got self-service screeners for customers. These tools assist focus the search for securities derived from the conditions you pick.

Have a look at Annual Reports. After 90% of your companies have actually been screened out, you can then start taking a deep dive onto the company?s fundamentals, looking at its competitors, and consequently researching its possibility for growth. This is certainly the period to perform your research. Read the company?s annual reports, much like the 10k statement, examine its financial reports, and analyze its management and strategies with respect to financial growth. In the event you only want to study one document, make sure that it?s the 10k report and you evaluate and comprehend it in its entirety. If the business model is way too complicated and you are not really clear on how the organization earns its revenue, move on to another organization.

Determine the Intrinsic Stock Value. Possibly the most challenging of calculations is the worth of a share price depending upon the longer term cash flow of the business. Figuring out the intrinsic value of securities is a challenge considering that you need to make several assumptions about the future, which is never a guarantee, and then there are challenging computations that must be calculated. Switching your assumptions mandates that you have to recalculate the share price.

The use of software programs such as an Intrinsic Stock Value Calculator may enable you to complete determine the intrinsic stock value prior to having to read the annual reports to get yourself a swift decision on whether to carry on with engaging in more research on a company, yet the values you enter in the calculator should really be founded upon sound judgment coupled with an analysis of the company?s fiscal reports. The growth rates really need to be driven by going through the annual reports and also leadership?s ideas for the firm. If you find that the intrinsic value you computed is actually more than today?s share price after you?ve done all 3 steps, perhaps you might have discovered a smart investment and are well on your way to become a productive value investor.

(AP) ? Hurricane Sandy knocked out a quarter of the cell towers in an area spreading across ten states, and the situation could get worse, federal regulators said Tuesday.

Many cell towers that are still working are doing so with the help of generators and could run out of fuel before commercial power is restored, the Federal Communications Commission said.

The landline phone network has held up better in the affected area, which stretches from Virginia to Massachusetts, the FCC said, but about a quarter of cable customers are also without service.

The FCC did not have an estimate for the number of people in the affected area.

Call centers for 911 service have held up relatively well, with only a few failures, according to FCC chairman Julius Genachowski. Calls to those centers are being rerouted, but operators may not be getting the automatic location information that 911 centers normally receive.

Sandy left widespread destruction, but the water welling into southern Manhattan drenched one of the world's densest communications nodes, taking out popular websites and forcing telecom carriers to reroute international traffic.

As commercial power was cut to the southern tip of Manhattan on Monday, data centers and phone-companies facilities in the Wall Street area were forced to switch to diesel generators. Data centers that failed to keep running on backup power brought down news and gossip sites Gawker, Huffington Post and many popular New York-based blogs.

Gawker was still down Tuesday afternoon, but Huffington Post was back online. Their webhost, Datagram Inc., said power was out and flooding in their basement was preventing their backup generators from pumping fuel. Internet connectivity from three providers was also down.

Verizon Communications Inc., the biggest phone company in the region, had some of its facilities in downtown Manhattan flooded, shutting down phone and Internet service.

Further uptown, data centers hosted in a "telecom hotel" that spans a whole block and houses Google's New York headquarters were reporting outages as well, apparently because backup power failed when commercial power was cut Monday evening.

Renesys Corp., which monitors the pathways of the Internet, said the storm caused major outages in New Jersey and New York. The city is a major transit point for international telecommunications traffic, and the firm said carriers were scrambling to route traffic around it.

Cablevision Systems Corp., which serves parts of Long Island, New York City and New Jersey, said it's experiencing widespread outages due to the loss of power. The company said it doesn't yet know the extent of outages in New Jersey, which bore the brunt of the storm.

Time Warner Cable Inc., the other big New York-area cable company, said it had no reports of significant damage to its network, but customers without power had no cable service.

AT&T Inc. said there are "issues" in hard-hit areas, and it's in the early stages of checking for damage and restoring service.

auto insurance Conyers GA The amount of drivers on the road increases each year. As this number goes up, the chances of a car collision will also go up. If you get in a car wreck, the auto insurance you have can make a large difference in what happens next. But why do you need to own insurance and just how much should you purchase? Car accidents can lead to a variety of different expenses, which your insurance might be able to pay for based on the insurance policy you have purchased. No matter where you are living, you will need to buy some type of auto insurance. Choosing to drive without insurance could mean you have to repair or replace a stolen or damaged vehicle or pay the cost of all the damage for which you might be responsible. Liability: Pays for expenses due to personal injury and property damage to others that you have caused. Damages from bodily injury can include medical fees, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Property damage includes damaged property and loss of use of property. It also covers your defense and court costs if you are sued. Local laws typically require minimum amounts of liability insurance, but larger amounts are available and very beneficial. Personal Injury Protection: Personal injury protection pays for all medical treatment for you or other people in your car, regardless of who was responsible for the accident. It is commonly called no-fault coverage. The minimum amount of personal injury protection is typically set by local government. Medical Payments: Medical payment coverage can be purchased in non-no-fault states; it will pay regardless of who carries responsibility for a collision. It pays for all insured person?s necessary medical or funeral expenses resulting from a crash. Collision: Damages that occur from a collision will be paid for under this type of insurance. Comprehensive: This type of insurance takes care of all non-collision damages. This could include fire and wind damage, vandalism, and robbery. Uninsured Motorist: If you are in an accident with an uninsured driver or a hit-and-run driver, this type of insurance will protect you. Under-Insured Motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is in a crash caused by another person who does not have the right amount of insurance to cover the total amount of the damages. Other kinds of car insurance, like emergency road service, are also available. Your auto insurance payments vary by company and will depend on multiple factors, such as: * What coverage you select * The make and model of the vehicle you drive * Your driving record * Your age, sex and marital status * Where you live Don?t procrastinate buying auto insurance; you should never drive a car without it. Review your needs, do your research , and with the guidance of your insurance agency, choose the option that fits you best.

Business Numbers Fall For Third Year Statistics... | Stuff.co.nz

More businesses closed than new businesses started up for the third year in a row, new numbers from Statistics New Zealand show.

As at February 29, there were 469,120 enterprises in New Zealand, a decrease of 0.8 per cent from last year.

The number of business locations fell across all regions except Wellington, which increased by less than 0.1 percent.

The financial and insurance services, with 29,180 enterprises, recorded the largest decrease with a fall of 3.5 per cent, or 1,070 enterprises.

Manufacturing had 20,580 enterprises, 1.8 per cent fewer than the year before. The number of enterprises in this industry has decreased for the last six years, but still has the largest number of employees (224,200), representing 12 per cent of all employees.

New Zealanders' obsession with property ownership showed up in the business statistics also. Enterprises offering real estate and property rental and hiring services had the largest number of enterprises, 96,820, and the majority of those, 95 per cent, are one-man bands.

Construction, with 49,100 enterprises at February this year also had a fall of 800 enterprises, or 1.6 per cent, but the number working in the industry rose 3000 to 117,800 from February 2011.

Nationally the number of new businesses starting up fell 11.2 per cent while the number of businesses closing increased 2.3 per cent compared to the year before.

Survival rates of businesses were similar to previous years, with 4 in 5 businesses surviving their first year of operation, and close to 30 per cent surviving 10 years.

The number of people employed by New Zealand's largest businesses (100 or more employees) increased by 1.1 per cent, but the number employed by smaller businesses (one to five employees) fell slightly by 0.1 percent.

"Almost half of all paid employees work for our largest businesses," Statistics New Zealand business infrastructure and performance manager Hamish Hill said.

The Auckland region still accounts for almost a third of all business locations, and 33 per cent of all paid employees, while a quarter were in the South Island.

The number of businesses in Christchurch has not fallen as much as expected due to the February 2011 earthquake, although there are 20 per cent fewer cafes and restaurants in the city, new numbers from Statistics New Zealand show.

As at February this year, there were 36,400 businesses in Christchurch, a 2.5 percent fall from the previous year.

The number of businesses located in the Christchurch central business district fell 34.6 per cent, but the city as a whole had only a 2.5 per cent decline.

Hill said the fall in the number of central city business locations had been offset by growth in the western suburbs.

The mix of industries had also changed.

In Christchurch as a whole there were almost 20 per cent fewer cafes and restaurants, but more than 10 per cent more business locations associated with house construction.

In the western suburbs, the number of employees in construction services was up by almost a quarter, Hill said.

Another Place To Talk Smack ? Fanatix Raises $1M To Bring Its Second Screen Sports App To The U.S.

159191v2In the UK, the summer of 2012 is already being looked back on as the British summer of sport. It kicked off with a traditionally poor performance by the English football team in the Euros, followed by a much more successful Olympics and Paralympics held on home soil. All three events were a national and televisual spectacle, but it would seem that the second screen saw plenty of action too. And so did fanatix, the mobile-first social network for sports fans, which is touting some encouraging growth and, carried by that momentum, is today launching in the U.S.

Breast cancer screening saves lives, says study | The Raw Story

    By Agence France-Presse
    Monday, October 29, 2012 23:14 EDT

    ?

PARIS ? The benefits of preemptive breast cancer screening outweigh the risks, a study said Tuesday, insisting the practice saves thousands of lives.

The new research adds to the debate about the dangers of overdiagnosis, which sees some women undergo invasive treatment for cancers that would never have made them ill or even been diagnosed were it not for the scans.

?Breast screening extends lives,? concluded a panel of researchers in The Lancet medical journal.

The team had analysed data from other trials conducted over many years in Britain, where women aged 50 to 70 are invited for a screening mammogram every three years.

The data, it said, pointed to a 20 percent reduction in mortality ? or one death prevented for every 180 women screened.

This meant that the UK screening programmes ?probably prevent about 1,300 breast cancer deaths every year,? said the report.

    But there is a cost.

Nearly 20 percent of breast cancer diagnosed by screening would never have caused any problems, said the study.

The panel, set up to advise British policymakers, estimated that among every 10,000 women invited to screening from the age of 50 in the Britain, 681 cancers would be discovered, of which 129 would be overdiagnoses, and 43 deaths prevented.

The report showed that ?the UK breast-screening programme extends lives and that, overall, the benefits outweigh the harms,? The Lancet wrote in an editorial.

?Women need to have full and complete access to this latest evidence in order to make an informed choice about breast cancer screening.?

The team conceded there were limitations to its work, including that all the data scrutinised was more than 20 years old.

Cancer experts have been at loggerheads for years about whether the benefits of screening outweigh the harm of overdiagnosis.

All cancer, once picked up in the screening process, is treated, often with surgery as well as radio- and chemotherapy, as it is impossible to tell which growths would have remained undetected for the remainder of a woman?s life.

In August, medical experts Steven Woloshin and Lisa Schwartz wrote in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) that screening only narrowly decreased risks that a 50-year-old woman would die from breast cancer within 10 years ? from 0.53 percent to 0.46 percent.

Up to half of women screened annually over 10 years experienced at least one false alarm that required a biopsy, they said.

And in 2010, a report in the New England Journal of Medicine said mammograms have only a ?modest? impact on reducing breast cancer deaths.

The latest panel had been created by the national cancer director for England, Mike Richards and Cancer Research UK chief executive officer Harpal Kumar.

Its work, said The Lancet, ?should begin to lay the benefits versus harm controversy to rest?.

Insights Into Solar Energy Career Certification Training Courses ...

Could you relish facilitating individuals to avoid wasting money plus care for our planet? Become trained to do jobs within the re-newables sector & you?ll get the right know-how to accomplish it. Individuals are really searching for alternative energy-systems to lower their particular CO2 emissions ? within just 12 months from now you actually could be operating as a skilled Installer of energy-efficient machinery.

Solar water heating collectors absorb the suns energy and change it into warm water. As the technology has been around for quite a while, we currently have got lots of systems out there. Running along-side standard water-heaters, these types of systems should deliver the majority of warm water that is likely to be needed by a typical family for the hotter time of each year. Over an one year period, a system will be budgeted to provide approximately half the overall domestic hot water provision. There are actually various designs for solar domestic hot water solutions, that come with either ?flat panel? and / or ?evacuated? tube collection systems. Many reputable suppliers produce ?solar-thermal? units which are usually fairly quick for trades-people to set up. The ideal situation would be on a rooftop area which is angled in a more southerly direction.

The UK Government is actually giving homeowners sizeable financial help to cover key installing fees when work is under-taken by suitably qualified Green Engineers. And there?s much more to come. At this time renewable energy supplies significantly less than two per cent of our entire house-hold power. Yet by twenty sixteen the law says that for each new property built that number needs to be fifteen percent. The moment is in fact coming soon when all homeowners will be seeking renewable energy solutions to use in their homes. The number of contracts for skilled tradespeople is without doubt going to rise!

Training programs in ?green collar work? expand on indepth skill-sets in each of the critical elements. Besides the main electrical accreditations (for example Part-P) and plumber?s skills, your training programme should preferably address various laws, government support of ?green installations? & Health & Safety. A large amount of the household focus within the replenishables market place is in fact centred on ?solar? thermal techniques & heat pumps. It makes financial sense to place your emphasis on these two areas. The truth is, as technology and even the law on eco building projects advances, we?ll see the same with training in this particular area. Extra alternatives on certain courses could very well discuss Biomass, or maybe ?grey? & rain water harvesting.

Naturally ?stored? heat (primarily from sunshine) is found within the soil, bed-rock & ground-water. Lengthy pipes have to be hidden under the surface and then filled up with a soluble fluid that won?t wreck the planet. The subterranean heat finds the joining heat-pump because the liquid heats up whilst it flows around. Hot air or maybe water is then simply pumped all over a residence to add to conventional heating units. Heat-pumps do require a small amount of energy to operate, but for every component of power they utilise, they crank out 4 ?units? of power in return. Why don?t you check out Check These Guys Out for current details.

A further way of utilizing ?solar? energy is by the application of photo voltaic panels that can turn the sun?s rays directly into electric power. As before, ?P V? plates are purpose designed to be placed on a roof structure or sometimes wall which should be preferably southerly-facing. As natural sunlight radiates onto the panels an electrical field is now produced that goes to an inverter within the roof space. The power distribution panel inside the house will receive the solar electricity and utilize it in combination with electricity from the National-Grid. House-holders should expect a photovoltaic device to give close to forty per cent of their total yearly electric power, and therefore reduce their overall expenses and ?carbon-footprint? substantially. They also automatically sell electricity back to the national-grid when their program provides more than they?ll use. The accepted tariff for P V electrical power has been improved by the govt in 2010, making for a more beneficial return on the up-front expense of the process. Important factors that could influence the quantity of electrical power developed are generally the size of the model, the location, the angle of the actual panels and whether there?s any shade due to buildings or maybe trees and such like.

How to recover data from a dead or erased hard drive

    7 hrs.

    Q. I?have a hard drive with valuable information on it, but I can't seem to access it???the drive is either damaged or erased. Is there any way I can see what's on the drive and get it off??

Don't worry, we're not going to ask where you got the drive, but there are plenty of ways to examine it and see if any of the data is recoverable. With a little time, the right tools, and some care, you may be able to get some data off of that drive.

Step one: Assemble your tools and examine the drive's condition
The first thing to do is make sure you have the tools required to connect this drive to another computer safely. Ideally, you'll have some kind of SATA/IDE to USB cable or USB drive enclosure or sled that you can mount the drive into and connect it to your computer easily. Sure, if you have a desktop and like getting your hands dirty you can try to install the drive as an internal one, but an external connection is faster and easier.

Next, take a look at the drive itself. Is it damaged in any way? Are the pins bent or broken? Make sure that the drive is in good enough condition to actually use before you try anything in the first place that may damage it even further. If the drive is too physically damaged to attempt recovery, you may need more drastic measures that we'll get to later. If everything looks good and you have the equipment required to connect the drive to your system, we can proceed.

Step two: Grab some data recovery software and connect the drive
Before you do much else, make sure your antivirus and antimalware tools are up to date. You don't know what you'll find on this drive, and you don't want it to start misbehaving once the drive is connected to an active system. Once you've done that, it's time to download and install some data recovery tools. Here are a few we love:

Recuva (Windows, Free): Personally, Recuva has been indispensible. Made by the same folks behind CCleaner, Recuva makes data recovery simple and easy. if you're only interested in browsing and restoring selected files off of the drive, Recuva is a great option. Alternatively, check out Undelete Plus for Windows.

FileSalvage (OS X, $80): File Salvage for Mac will set you back some serious coin, but it's one of the best tools to pull data off of a connected hard drive in OS X. It can recover virtually any type of file on multiple partition types, and prides itself on its ability to recover from damaged drives and corrupt media. If you want an alternative, try Data Rescue for Mac ($100).

TestDisk (Win/OS X/Linux, Free): If you're not afraid of the command line, TestDisk is an open source utility that can run against almost any platform or partition type. It does a great job of recovering data quickly, and won't do unnecessary writes against the drive you're trying to recover from.

Bootable Linux distros for drive recovery: If you're not interested in messing around with apps (or paying for them), consider burning a bootable CD or USB key with BackTrack, Bart PE, or SpinRite on it, so you can boot to an OS that's not your primary drive, avoid writing or touching the drive you want to recover from, and run a host of recovery and forensics tools against that drive that are highly effective and completely free.?

A number of these tools can recover from formatted drives, especially if the data hasn't been overwritten. We've tackled this topic before, and used Knoppix as our bootable linux distro, but the steps apply to the ones we've mentioned as well. For more reading, check out this old but still largely accurate guide at Linux.com to recovering from formatted drives.

Remember, the less you work with the drive you want to recover data from, the better. As you read from the drive, you run the risk of exacerbating any damage it may have. The more you write to the drive, the more likely you are to overwrite something you want to recover. Bootable Linux distros??many of which have tools like TestDisk pre-installed (among other, more advanced tools)???are the best way to go if you're familiar with the method and if you're interested in recovering entire partitions, or making a non-bootable drive bootable again. If you're just looking for files and you know the drive was in a Windows system or a Mac, a stand-alone app is an easier way to go.

Step three: Get out the big guns (and your wallet)
Okay, so the drive is physically damaged, has been wiped and overwritten, or nothing else you try works and you really, really need the data off of it. You're even willing to pay a lot?for it. We're not going to ask why, but at this point it's time to call in the professionals.?

Pick up the phone and call the folks at DriveSavers and OnTrack to see what they can do for you. I've had good experiences with OnTrack. DriveSavers is well known and loved, both because they came to the rescue with free drive recovery services after September 11, 2001 and more recently helping Wired's Mat Honan recover from his epic hacking. Both companies do a superb job at pulling data even off of drives that have been formatted, overwritten, or even severely physically damaged. Keep in mind though that these services generally run in the thousand dollar-range, according to DriveSavers,?and higher.

If the drive is yours, or the data you get from the drive is valuable, we'd strongly suggest you make sure your data is backed up, both locally and online. After all, it's better to be able to get the data back quickly than have to jump through these hoops every time a drive fails. Remember, every hard drive will fail eventually, it's just a matter of time. Now go forth, use this knowledge for good, and recover!?

The idea of taking a mature cell and removing its identity (nuclear reprogramming) so that it can then become any kind of cell, holds great promise for repairing damaged tissue or replacing bone marrow after chemotherapy. Hot on the heels of his recent Nobel prize Dr John B. Gurdon has published today in BioMed Central's open access journal Epigenetics & Chromatin research showing that histone H3.3 deposited by the histone-interacting protein HIRA is a key step in reverting nuclei to a pluripotent type, capable of being any one of many cell types.

All of an individual's cells have the same DNA, yet these cells become programmed, as the organism matures, into different types such as heart, or lung or brain. To achieve this different genes are more or less permanently switched off in each cell lineage. As an embryo grows, after a certain number of divisions, it is no longer possible for cells which have gone down the pathway to become something else. For example heart cells cannot be converted into lung tissue, and muscle cells cannot form bone.

One way to reprogram DNA is to transfer the nucleus of a mature cell into an unfertilized egg. Proteins and other factors inside the egg alter the DNA switching some genes on and other off until it resembles the DNA of a pluripotent cell. However there seem to be some difficulties with this method in completely wiping the cell's 'memory'.

One of the mechanisms regulating the activation of genes is chromatin and in particular histones. DNA is wrapped around histones and alteration in how the DNA is wound changes which genes are available to the cell. In order to understand how nuclear reprogramming works Dr Gurdon's team transplanted a mouse nucleus into a frog oocyte (Xenopus laevis). They added fluorescently tagged histones by microinjection, so that they could see where in the cell and nucleus the these histones collected.

Prof Gurdon explained, "Using real-time microscopy it became apparent that from 10 hours onwards H3.3 (the histone involved with active genes) expressed in the oocyte became incorporated into the transplanted nucleus. When we looked in detail at the gene Oct4, which is known to be involved in making cells pluripotent, we found that H3.3 was incorporated into Oct4, and that this coincided with the onset of transcription from the gene." Prof Gurdon's team also found that Hira, a protein required to incorporate H3.3 into chromatin, was also required for nuclear reprogramming.

Dr Steven Henikoff, from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, commented, "Manipulating the H3.3 pathway may provide a way to completely wipe a cell's 'memory' and produce a truly pluripotent cell. Half a century after showing that cells can be reprogrammed this research provides a link to the work of Shinya Yamanaka (who shared the prize), and suggests that chromatin is a sticking point preventing artificially induced reprogramming being used routinely in the clinic."
