Elephant can speak Korean ? out loud

A zoo elephant in South Korea can speak Korean out loud, researchers say. The pachyderm is capable of saying "hello," "good," "no," "sit down" and "lie down" ? all by using its trunk to do the work of lips in a process scientists don?t fully understand.

The elephant likely does not understand the actual meaning of what he says, researchers said.

Past reports have suggested both African and Asian elephants were capable of vocal mimicry like parrots. African elephants have been known to imitate the sound of truck engines, and a male Asian elephant living in a Kazakhstan zoo was said to utter sounds resembling Russian and Kazakh, but that case was never investigated scientifically.

Cosmic Log: The whale that talked like a human

Scientists investigating an Asian elephant known as Koshik say the beast can imitate human speech, pronouncing words in Korean, and those who know the language can readily understand Koshik. He accomplished this in a very unusual way ? using his trunk stuck inside his mouth. [ Watch Koshik Speak Korean ]

Elephants cannot use their lips to make sounds like humans do, since their upper lips are fused with their noses to form their trunks. Instead, Koshik somehow controls the sounds coming from him by moving his trunk inside his throat.

A special elephant
"We do not really know what Koshik is doing exactly," said researcher Angela Stoeger-Horwath, a bioacoustician at the University of Vienna.

Three other Asian elephants have been known to whistle by pressing their trunks against their mouths, but this is the first time any elephant was known to alter their sounds by sticking its trunk into its mouth.

"Where there's a will, there's a way. Koshik's drive to share vocalizations with his human companions was so strong that he invented a whole new way of making sounds to achieve it," Stoeger-Horwath told LiveScience.

Although elephants living under human care may be heavily exposed to speech from birth on, "we all know that they do not imitate speech on a regular basis. So what is special about Koshik?" Stoeger-Horwath said. [Elephant Images: World's Largest Land Mammals]

Koshik was the only elephant at the Everland Zoo in South Korea for about seven years from 1995 to 2002, when he was a juvenile from age 5 to 12. His trainers first noticed him imitating human speech in 2004.

"The decisive factor for speech imitation in Koshik may be that humans were the only social contact available during an important period of bonding and development," Stoeger-Horwath said.

"We suggest that Koshik started to adapt his vocalizations to his human companions to strengthen social affiliation, something that is also seen in other vocal-learning species ? and in very special cases, also across species," Stoeger-Horwath said.

Elephant vocabulary
The researchers asked 16 native Korean speakers to write down what they heard when listening to playbacks of Koshik's sounds. The elephant's vocabulary apparently consists of five words ? "annyong" ("hello"), "choah" ("good"), "aniya" ("no"), "anja" ("sit down") and "nuo" ("lie down") ? although his ability to imitate their consonants often proved weak.

When scientists analyzed Koshik's sounds, they were clearly different from the usual calls of elephants and exactly copied the pitch, timbre and other details of human voices.

"This is remarkable considering the huge size, the long vocal tract, and other anatomical differences between an elephant and a human," Stoeger-Horwath said.

As far as the scientists can tell, Koshik does not actually understand exactly what he says.

"Koshik mainly seems to be using these vocalizations as a way of bonding with people, rather than for their meaning," Stoeger-Horwath said.

Still, researchers said Koshik's imitation skills may yield insights on the biology and evolution of complex vocal learning. This ability is key to human speech and music.

Further studies might also explore how elephants vocally communicate with each other.

"Elephants are highly social mammals living in groups of related and socially affiliated individuals," Stoeger-Horwath said. "Elephants use low-frequency vocalizations to keep contact even over great distances when they split up for a certain period of time. It is therefore important for elephants to identify members of their family based on vocalizations. One possibility that we suggest is that socially affiliated elephants might imitate each other to increase similarity of their vocalizations to facilitate vocal recognition."

The scientists detailed their findings online Thursday in the journal Current Biology.

Report: Microsoft may make its own Windows Phone hardware

13 hrs.

Microsoft is working with Asian suppliers to create its?own Windows Phone hardware, says the Wall Street Journal.?

You could be forgiven for asking, "Didn't Microsoft just launch its own phones?" But those new Windows Phone 8 models run software from Microsoft on hardware built by Nokia and HTC, while the rumored phone in question would be Microsoft through and through.

Controlling both hardware and software is the model long held by Apple, adopted by Google as well in recent years. (At least in part: Google still licenses its Android operating system to companies like Samsung, and its flagship Nexus phone is built by LG; its own hardware company, Motorola, has yet to graduate to home team status.) By producing all parts of the mobile device, including online services, it is possible to provide a more integrated, predictable experience for the user.

This isn't the first time we've heard reports of?Microsoft's purported moves into phone hardware. And any forays into first-party hardware may simply be a backup plan in case Windows Phone 8 fails to gain traction with customers on other partner devices.

But as the recent launch of the Microsoft Surface proves, Microsoft is willing to take steps into hardware manufacturing that seemed alien to the company as recently as a year ago.?

Cervical SpondylosisTreatment of cervical spondylosis can begin with the acute painful phase and progress to the rehabilitative phase (to delay relapse) and preventive phase (to delay the progress of disease process). The cervical spondylosis follows cyclic remissions and exacerbations.

Cervical Spondylosis Treaments

Acute Phase

In this the soft tissues are inflamed and the patient has severe pain. This may last for 3-7 days depending on severity. The patient usually comes to see the doctor when the pain is unbearable and is interfering with his day today activities and it may be following a history of trauma or after repeated episodes of exacerbation and remissions.

Acute Phase

The aim of physician in this phase is to relieve pain, soft tissue inflammation and assist in natural resolution of the symptoms. The treatment followed is analgesics for pain and inflammation control, hot water fomentation to relieve the stiffness thus aiding in pain relief and mobility, anti emetics if there is giddiness. Rest should be given to neck during this phase with the aid of a neck collar. Neck traction is avoided during this acute inflammatory phase.

Rehabilitative Phase

As the pain decreases aim is to strengthen neck muscles, increase mobility of neck, relieve pressure on compressed nerves, help the patient correct posture and life style modifications to prevent relapse.?The therapist may use several pain relieving modalities like hot water fomentation, therapeutic ultra sound, trans-cutaneous electric nerve stimulation as needed. Neck traction may be given to relieve nerve compression.

A well trained specialist at give some nerve mobilization and manual mobilization of vertebrae for pain relief, decreasing the compressing force on nerve and increasing mobility.Muscle strengthening of neck and shoulder muscles may be done by the therapist.?Home exercise program which are simple may be given to the patient for continuation during and after the therapy. These may include simple active and passive stretching exercises for increased mobility and isometric contraction exercises for strengthening.

The patient should be instructed to wear a firm (neither hard nor soft) neck collar for at least 3 weeks and should be instructed to use a thin pillow while sleeping or to use a small roll of cloth below the neck so as it supports the curve of the neck. In some cases where spinal cord is compressed, surgery is necessary.

Preventive Phase

Cervical spondylosis is a part of normal ageing process, so prevention aims at delaying onset and progress of the disease or delaying its prolapse. However, regular low-impact activities, (such as swimming, walking, or yoga) can help to prevent some of the symptoms. Maintaining a good posture while standing, sitting, driving, working at the computer and sleeping helps to prevent damage to the spine.

Preventive Phase

Correct equipment and techniques while playing sports, may reduce the risk of neck injury.?People with sedentary occupations should take breaks to stand in between. Seats should be too soft to avoided slouching and position should be changed as often as possible. Persons with spondylosis should sleep on a firm mattress on their sides with knees bent.

Fear Is Small Business Enemy: WTF is Biggest Ally | Small Business ...

A small business entrepreneurs biggest enemy is FEAR and its biggest ally is WTF ? Working Through Fear.

wtf

  • Fear of success.
  • Fear of failure.
  • Fear of rejection.
  • Fear of the unknown.
  • Fear of making a mistake.

Karl Albrecht, Ph.D., is the author of more than 20 books, including Practical Intelligence: the Art & Science of Common Sense. In an?article posted on Psychology Today,? he says:

?There are only?five basic fears, out of which almost all of our other so-called fears are manufactured (which are not listed above), and that the more clearly and calmly we can articulate the origins of the fear, the less our fears frighten us and control us.?

How we can free ourselves from the roadblocks that our fears can create?

Fear Is Mostly An Illusion

Most of the things we think we are afraid of are NGIR ? not grounded in reality. We mostly make mountains out of molehills, usually working ourselves up into crazy frenzies that zaps our energy and self confidence.

Have you been asked to speak, or is there a project you want to pitch for, or meet someone who you think wouldn?t want to meet you?

Perspective and Action

Say yes to speaking, pitch for the project and ask someone you know to make that introduction. It?s your perspective of the outcome that creates the fear instead of taking the action, which can help you work through it.

WTF

If we are to create the habit of being fearless, we must practice working through our fears. This is where networks, support systems and family can make a big difference.

Reach out to trusted people, or professionals and get some encouragement and help, if you can?t do it yourself. Don?t go it alone.

Building More Confidence

The best way to work through fear is to network both in person and online. Blend the two, so that you are working on your interpersonal and communication skills and watch your confidence soar.

Join the chamber and get on a committee, or become an ambassador. Volunteer in the community and help others. Find a mentor and help them with a project they are working on.

Go Inside For The Answers

One of the main themes of my book is ?everything you need is already inside of you.? ?All the answers are there about what you do and don?t know.? Value and trust who you are and what you have done more. Whatever you need to learn or add, learn it, add it.

It is not possible to underestimate how inspiring Eleanor Roosevelt?s?You Learn by Living: 11 Keys for a More Fulfilling Life, still are after more than 50 years since it was first published. In her second key:

?Needing to face the great enemy, fear: ?You must do the thing you think you cannot do.?

If we keep working through our fears and put them into their sober perspective, we will be freed to succeed. The rule about fear is simply to do the thing you fear the most 10 times and you will not fear it anymore.

Try it. What do you have to lose?

WTF ? Work Through Fear.

Visually dazzling 'Wreck-It-Ralph' scores high

By Justin Lowe, The Hollywood Reporter

REVIEW: As the fright season begins to give way to the holidays, Disney looks to capitalize right out of the gate Nov. 2 with 3-D animated comedy "Wreck-It Ralph." An homage to classic video-game culture wrapped in an adventurous road movie, "Ralph" is poised to sweep the family-friendly demo in the first few weeks of the month before any significant challengers emerge.

Guided by executive producer John Lasseter, Walt Disney Animation Studios has clearly devoted significant resources and talent to "Wreck-It Ralph," ?recruiting a top-notch cast and a diverse array of animation, visual effects and lighting artists to contribute to the distinct and varied vid-game styles. With a mix of retro eye-candy for grown-ups and a thrilling, approachable storyline for the tykes, the film casts a wide and beguiling net.

VIDEO: New "Wreck-It Ralph" trailer offers Sonic, Yoshi and more video game stars

Emulating a lo-res '80s video game, "Wreck-It Ralph" envisions the titular character as the short-tempered, sledgehammer-fisted, 600-pound bad guy competing against goody-good nemesis Felix in a game located in Mr. Litwak?s (Ed O?Neill) video arcade that?s known as ?Fix-It Felix Jr.? As Ralph (John C. Reilly) tells some fellow evildoers at his first ?Bad-Anon? meeting, he?s a reluctant villain, tired of always being the culprit who tears down the apartment building inhabited by the Nicelanders who worship Felix (Jack McBrayer) for his superior repair skills.

After 30 years of taking the blame, Ralph?s ready for a change -- he thinks maybe if he can earn a medal, the Nicelanders might give him some respect and invite them to one of their frequent cocktail parties. Traveling through the arcade?s power cords and surge protectors, Ralph journeys to Game Central Station, the gateway to every game in the store. Hearing that first-person shooter challenge ?Hero?s Duty? awards a medal for bravery, Ralph suits up to join no-nonsense Sergeant Calhoun?s (Jane Lynch) platoon to battle the Cy-Bugs, a nasty computer virus in the form of cyber spiders. ?

Escaping hi-def ?Hero?s Duty? with the coveted service medal, Ralph crash-lands one of Calhoun?s spaceships into ?Sugar Rush,? a Candy Land-styled race-car game, after he?s attacked onboard by a massive Cy-Bug. He quickly loses his citation to pint-sized Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), a little girl determined to compete in one of Sugar Rush?s prestigious races. Her bratty attitude and refusal to return the medal, which she can use to stake her spot in an upcoming competition, enrage Ralph, but he?s powerless to force the girl to do his bidding.

VIDEO: "Wreck-It Ralph" teaser trailer: John C. Reilly gets animated

Following an unpleasant encounter with Sugar Rush dictator King Candy (Alan Tudyk), Ralph allies himself with Vanellope in a plan to recover his medal and help the kid win a spot in the race. But first they?ll have to in break into the King?s specialized factory and build a competitive race car -- ?and it might be a good idea for Vanellope to actually learn to drive it. Meanwhile, Felix has abandoned the Wreck-It Ralph game and the Nicelanders, joining up with Calhoun on a quest to retrieve his friend and protect Sugar Rush from the Cy-Bugs before the game gets flatlined.

Although the script is an original by Phil Johnston and Jennifer Lee, with its tortured toy characters facing obsolescence and searching for freedom and meaning, it bears a distinct Pixar DNA signature. Johnston and Lee don't stray too far from the Disney template, however, and although the characters are digital, their emotions are very recognizably human. Since Ralph and Vanellope are both outcasts, their struggles for acceptance are comfortably similar and familiar.

Making his feature film debut, Emmy-award winning director Rich Moore ("The Simpsons") ably manipulates the action by tantalizingly shifting the characters between game worlds. Effortlessly orchestrating a dizzying variety of visual elements, Moore consistently manages to keep the focus on Ralph and his comrade's multiplying perils. Visually, Pixar?s influence is also evident in the level of detail lavished on the wide range of quirky characters and nearly every setting and background scene. Fortunately the more sugar-coated sentiments are mostly dialed back in favor of genuine character development and rousing, digitally realistic 3-D action.

PHOTOS: Fall Movie Preview 2012: Major new releases from Spielberg, Jackson, Tarantino

The audience?s POV is occasionally represented by a girl who frequents the ?real world? of Mr. Litwak?s video arcade, where she interacts with all of the games depicted in the film. Game-play visual elements are used to enhance the impression of actually playing the arcade consoles, which can sometimes get distractingly disorienting as the narrative slips in and out of the video arcade setting.

An enthusiastic cast lends voice to the characters, led by Reilly, capably evincing the role of "Wreck-It Ralph." His sad-sack sentiments, however, are frequently overshadowed by the hyperactive and super-snarky Vanellope. Silverman fully inhabits the character, marvelously calibrating her voice?s volume, insinuating tone and emotional impact to match the character?s antic facial expressions and unpredictable behavior. Tudyk is ridiculously over the top as the punning Mad-Hatter meets Wizard of Oz-like King Candy, while McBrayer and Lynch add surprising dimensionality to the increasingly smitten pair of Felix and Calhoun.

Editor Tim Mertens modulates the sometimes frenetic pace with brief interludes of introspection and camaraderie that help fill in the characters. Henry Jackman's lively score is supplemented by musical selections from R&B star Rihanna, electronica artist Skrillex and classic Kool & the Gang, among others.
