Discovery to air 'Storm Chasers' tribute

TV

The former stars of "Storm Chasers," a docuseries which aired on the Discovery Channel from 2007 until 2011, pursued tornadoes to help meteorologists better understand and anticipate the hard-to-predict forces of nature. They also reported the stories of incredible wind speeds and devastation on their show so viewers could grasp the potentially deadly nature of twisters.

On May 31, Carl Young, Tim Samaras, as well as Samaras' son, Paul, became part of one such story. The three men from the chasing group TWISTEX (Tactical Weather Instrumented Sampling in/near Tornadoes Experiment) died when a multiple-vortex tornado overtook them near Oklahoma City.

The Discovery Channel will air a tribute to them this week.

An enhanced version of the program "Mile Wide Tornado: Oklahoma Disaster," which originally aired June 2, will feature scenes and highlights of the men from their days on "Storm Chasers."

"Mile Wide Tornado: Storm Chasers Tribute" airs June 5 at 10 p.m.
