But, with early detection, mortality rates have been decreasing over the past two decades.
Of all the imaging centers in Idaho, only four carry the distinction of Breast Imaging Center of Excellence and one of those is in Twin Falls.
According to Marla Van Tassel, a breast biopsy coordinator for St. Luke's, "that means we provide mammogram services, ultrasound biopsy services along with stereo biopsy guided services."
For some women, a mammogram can be a frightening and invasive procedure.
But St. Luke's Magic Valley Women's Imaging Center is hoping to ease those fears.
"I think we have a great, inviting environment where women can feel comfortable when they come in to get their mammograms. We have experienced techs that do a great job."
Most mammograms are quick, lasting between five and ten minutes.
Marla Van Tassell also goes out into the community to promote the importance of mammograms.
"We invite people to invite us to their community groups so we can promote mammograms and let them know how important mammograms are...it's important to understand early detection is the key. If we can catch it early, then we have a greater chance of catching it."
Being overweight, frequent alcohol consumption, even combined hormone replacement therapy are all risk factors.
With breast cancer being the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, there's never been a better time to take care of your health.
Local awareness programs include the 900 Women campaign, Women's Health Check and the Diane Bolt Fund.
