MONTREAL ? The S?ret? du Qu?bec has been called by local police to examine two suspicious packages found Friday morning at the homes of managers at Kronos Canada Inc., where unionized plant workers have been locked out since mid-June.
Constable Serge C?t? of the R?gie intermunicipale de police Richelieu-Saint-Laurent said a security company retained by Kronos Canada advised the South Shore police force of the first package, ?about the dimensions of a shoebox,? about 8:30 a.m.
It was reported found near a vehicle parked at a manager?s home on Duvernay St., in Verch?res.
A second call regarding a ?very similar package? ? this one spotted by a police patrol officer ? was received at 9:44 a.m., regarding another Kronos manager?s residence on Laure Conan St. in adjacent Varennes, C?t? said.
A security perimeter has been established around both sites, with ?some evacuations? in both instances, C?t? said, pending the SQ?s arrival.
?They are on their way,? C?t? said shortly before noon.
About 320 workers at the Kronos Canada plant in Varennes have been locked out since June 13.
The plant produces titanium pigments, used to whiten everything from household paints to plastics.
The primary issues in the labour dispute include a company plan to hire more contract workers, according to the union, the National Union of employees of Kronos Canada.
Kronos Canada locked the workers out shortly after they had rejected a contract offer by a 93-per-cent vote.
An earlier version of this story stated that the CSN represented Kronos workers. Although the CSN is affiliated with the National Union of employees of Kronos Canada, it does not speak for these workers. The Gazette regrets the error.
